Major thread drift … has anyone ever toured on the weird cut runs on Lolo Peak that never made it to resort status?

Did they get enough snow this year? Is it private?

I went cat skiing on those back when they were trying to convince people to build a resort there. It was free just had to sign up and listen to their proposal. I did not sign the petition. The skiing was pretty marginal but I remember a few good turns being had. I remember decent coverage but also kinda thin, thinking that was 2007, could be off a year on that though.

So yesterday was the memorial for Ray up at the LRI, which was an amazing gathering of hundreds of people who knew him. One of the most powerful community events I've experienced in life. People I hadn't see in years were there. Beer and pizza were provided by two of Ray's closest friends on the mountain (one of which I skied with this afternoon).

After many had left, I was approached by a FS engineer who was directly involved in the chair lift investigation of the Snowpark incident. He told me he'd been reading this thread, hoped I'd keep fighting the good fight, because he was loving what I was posting, was impressed with how close I was without first hand knowledge of the investigation, and that I was about 95% accurate in my overall assessment of the contributory elements of the incident. Then he went into very specific detail about the tests they'd done, and specifically how they believe it had happened, including the following points:

-It was primarily fore-aft swing (as is caused when a chair loads and lifts behind a skier standing and being dragged forward by the chair on the ramp), which contributed to the chair's back being high enough to come in contact with the halo.

-The swinging, combined with the relatively steep angle of the cable, between tower one and two, allowed the back of the chair to hit the halo, and hook on the mounting hardware of the halo support.

-The bent back halo made it possible for the back of the chair to hook on the mounting hardware.

-Two chairs in a row loaded with a small child on the inside plus a large adult on the outside, leading to the cable to twist, creating some sideways swing toward the inside, which, along with the fore aft swing, created an elliptical movement of the chair as it swung, creating the angle needed to hook the back of the chair.

-The halo, even though it was bent back, would not allow the chair to hit the tower itself.

-The lift operator erred in not hitting E-stop sooner.

He expressed his regret that I'd been subjected to personal attacks by people here who didn't seem to want to understand the incident.

The fact that the seat back of the chair was able to hit the halo seems like pretty clear evidence that the chair was designed and / or installed incorrectly.

Also unclear how the halo managed to shear the back of the chair off without taking the rider with it.

    Ha ha, thanks Harry.

My question was more along the lines of: is that cut forest terrain even worth touring? Or is it legal to?

I know Missoula had a larger snow year than normal, so I thought maybe that put it into play.

    WOOT WOOT! Nukin' in Missoula

Those cut runs are all on private land.

There was some controversy at the time that some timber was cut across the line onto USFS land, but my memory is only 15-20 feet.

Lolo Peak is certainly legit ski terrain.

If my memory is correct, there was a different proposal back in the early 70s to run a chairlift up Lolo Peak from the north (Hwy 12). It was approved by the USFS but funding fell through and nothing was ever done.

Shit, I forgot about the golf courses. In retrospect, I fully support the plan for more golf in the Missoula area.

Yeah that makes no sense to me at all. Wouldn't this have caused a serious injury to at least one, if not both, of the pass

The adult was outside of the halo, the very small child on the inside, the back of the chair swung back toward the halo tilting the riders heads forward away from the halo, leaving the back of the chair highest and closest to the bolt that it hooked on.

Incidentally, winter doesn't seem to be done yet.

    Tuesday:
Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 30. South wind 10 to 20 mph becoming west northwest in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.

Soooooo, will I be able to just do some Paradise laps tomorrow afternoon if I go in and out through Neff and just follow the tracks?
    All skied out by then?
Gotta drive a lift around tomorrow morning.

You can do it that way, or you can just park outside the gate, go up through the base area, and climb to ski wherever the snow's untracked. The season is over, no one will hassle you.

During the season, uphill traffic is closed on area, during lift operating hours, as per the special use permit, and that's why the Neffland approach was developed by folks who exclusively hike for turns and want to reach the back-country without interacting with Snowbowl. Also, Snowbowl discourages people climbing up after hours during the season, probably some liability there.

I've never heard of Pat complaining of hikers passing through the lot in the post season, in fact, he's generally social if one says hi; same with all the maintenance guys, if they're not busy. Just park outside the steel gate on the creek side (the hill side often drops rocks in the spring, and is the side Pat will plow snow to on days when big spring storms require it, I've seen cars buried behind the berm when they parked there before he plowed with the grader).

As long as you park on the creek side you won't be in the way of in and out traffic.
