Holy crap. That space sky dive story is the coolest thing I've heard in a long time. I bet this dude could take on Bruce Lee, Yoda, and Napoleon Dynamite all before lunch.
Yeah, did you guys see that on OLN? That was totally sick. His hand was about to explode because part of suit was not pressurized. Holy Shit that would be scary, then knowing you still have to jump and you might die - absolutely crazy!Originally posted by Baconzoo

PA's drop is sick. Check out The Swarm... it is sick, but Stiches, Riches and DH boards is better.

Just for some other nordic jump stuff. The k120 from top of jump to the bottom at the oly park is 550(50 story building) feet tall. The inrun takes up around 300 of that vertical. The landing hill is around 71 degrees in slope. The jump record here is about 7 feet short of a football field and a half of flight set by an 11 year old. It's the second safest sport in the winter games behind curling. I will try and find out the actual vertcal dropped off the jumps when i get into work later.Originally posted by CaddyDaddy77
The distance is over 100 meters or 328 ft, but wer'e not talking apples to apples here.
The jump is designed so the skier can make himself into a foil and glide the distance of the outrun, where dropping your just that, dropping. Guys are pulling off the ramp at 60mph or so vs. ??? for the average take-off for a cliff, and on drops, your not going to get the benefit of flattening out and letting the wind support you like jumping. The transition is smooth and guys glide in versus making a bombhole, the potential to wreck yourself is there, but it's like a jet doing a scheduled landing and somebody ripping the wings off in midflight.
I would wonder how far the drop is for a 90 meter hill, no guess as to how far it actually is. I've done 30's and 50's but pussed on the big ones.
Someone a little fonder of math than I maybe can figure it out I suppose with the heigth of the hill, landing point and distance, right?
Check out this bad boy:
This is the Copper Preak ski flying hill in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Supposedly the biggest ski jumping hill in the Western Hemisphere. I guess it actually hasn't been used since 1994, though.
I own a copy of the Swarm, and that drop is sick. They count the feet as he drops. Also, didn't Jamie pierre break the record this past winter? I heard he dropped a 235 ft'er in the targhee backcountry this past winter. I assume it was filmed and maybe when the new flics come out it will be there.
Lawless: still to be attempted.
At least that's what March's Freeze said. That's not totally up to date, but as far as I know, he's planning on it for this winter.

Is ski jumping really safer than Speed Skating (long track) or figure skating (I'm assuming that injuries caused by your competitor's boyfriend don't count)?Originally posted by Ski Monkey

Yeah a couple of times. This year I was minutes away from hucking it. I was in the process of getting the helmet cam ready as the dreaded east winds kicked up (meaning a stiff wind blowing straight up the face of this cliff, i.e. Not Good) and the light went to shit. I called Patterson the night before, got some good advice and then proceeded to get shut out that next day and the rest of the year.Originally posted by Tyrone Shoelaces
and paging Alkasquawlik on Patterson's drop....you've been up on that huck no?
But to add to the conversation of big hucks, I think the two gnarliest things are the wind resistance under skis. Tremann in his huck landed on his uppershoulder blades because of the wind resistance under his skis. (oh and Chuck went bigger than Tremann.) The second thing is when you stand on top of a cliff of that size you lose a lot of your depth perception. The first thing I said when I first looked off Tremann's cliff was "This thing looks small". But the fact is that it is so big, you can't properly gauge the height. Meaning that not only are you going to be hucking a 140' cliff but your doing it almost blind because of the loss of depth perception. Patterson in our conversation illustrated the importance of holding your position forward a lot longer than you thing you have to. Open up to early, as Tremann did, and you'll be blown off in some random direction.
Oh yeah and when you have JT Holmes, Gov, McConkey and Gaffney yelling to me from the bottom, "Huck that shit, Cody!! You fucking pussy just GOOOOOOO!!" that doesn't lessen the nerves. Then Shane that night told me he wants to follow me off that cliff.....but with a parachute.
Reading alka's post just made my stomach drop like being there. I want a pow day!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure thing Z-. He started flailing 2 milliseconds after takeoff and almost died on a rock. Coming within 3 feet of dying for a huge flailing drop onto your ear == retarded.Originally posted by Zeedashbo

Blurred, I'll get right on that after you get back in the kitchen and bake me a pie.
Yeah, my bowels got loose reading Alka's post too.![]()
I'm going to reach terminal velocity this Winter filming for Theory-3. Whether terminal velocity happens at 65 feet or 150 feet, it doesn't matter, I'm going to stick it clean too.
I heart this thread.
I think I need to take up skydiving when I can't ski. That Shane McConkey feller is onto something.
Can you imagine how fast the ground came up on that dude who jumped outta the capusule in 1960? Daaaaamn.![]()
Balls Deep in the 'Ho
With the distance involved, and the 14 minute flight time, it probably looked (to him) like he was barely moving at all.Originally posted by 13

I bet the best part was when he first entered the clouds. I wonder if he got wet? Did his visibility go to zero? Fack.
it was 14 minute flight, but i think they said it was ONLY a 4 minute free fall. I am not strong at math, but lets see 714 mph/ 60min=11.9 miles per minute. 102000ft/5280 ft (per mile)= 19.1 miles. So I'm pretty sure that he did not free fall for 14 minutes.
Phunk, i was wondering if he starting burning up at that speed entering the atmosphere due to the air friction???
"oh shit, i'm on fire....literally" talk about crap your pants, and thanks Alka for the Pucker factor of the day.
Ducktherope- 2 other people have tried HALO jumps around 100000 ft and they both died, so that chick might just become another statistic.
I didn't get the flight-time vs drop-time thing. But... He didn't drop at 700+ mph the entire time, only at the start because of the thinner atmosphere (or so iceman tells me.)

most likely he did the 714 mph before reaching upper atmosphere. But even if he did that speed or close to it for just a minute, he would have descended half the distance in that time, FKNA. Where do i sign up?Originally posted by phUnk

minimal air resistance = fast falling, no?
edit: crinkle: he was in the atmosphere the whole time, just in the wispy thin parts way out there. A balloon don't work in space, mang.

yes i know the whole atmosphere thing, just using simple terms for the little peops

In other words, aren't we not all not saying different things? (I think...)
