    Update:

Started pissing in Muskegon at about 2am last night and continued until about 10am today, which killed any thoughts I had about poaching that hill I talked about....the snowpack hasn't suffered that much, but we have definitely lost some snow, and what was super nice blower with a bit of cream on top has now become creamcheese....on the plus side, the rain has turned back over to massive flakes and its coming down at a pretty good clip right now. Unfortunately however, temps are supposed to plummet and I think things are going to get pretty crusty around here at least. Then the real shit show starts on Friday night with a bunch of rain in the cards followed up once again by cold temps.....

I guess the only consolation I can take from this is that its still before Christmas, and the days that I have been out this year have been some of the best I've had in Michigan, so that's good. I'm sure we'll have to deal with this warm/cold bullshit for most of the winter, but at least when its been cold its been dumping enough to cover the ice, and that's about all I can ask for...

And if someone can explain to me how to embed videos, I'll post a couple of clips from my time out west...nothing much, but whatevs...

Here's that photo....I wish it was taken a little further back so you could see where I was headed. I'm still on my way up in the photo, and I have to apologize about the weak style on this method grab...I normally wouldn't post something this crummy, but I know FNS will bust my chops if I don't...

You just showed proof that you can get good air at cab without big jumps, just have to look in the right places. Just gotta watch yourself, last year I dropped out of the trees on South Peak and almost got hit by someone on a lift.

Are you talking about that little bump that comes at the exit of the run right under the south peak chair? That shit is so sketch, I know what you mean, and the landing is flat as hell.

Honestly, I really wish this photo had been taken later in the flight and from further back, we were dropping that headwall easily 20 vertical feet and flying out probably 40+ horizontally...I seriously haven't been that high since Tahoe...

When FNS asked if those bombs were ours, this was his expression...

I'm calling bullshit on the 20 feet...

Those craters were every bit of 30+ vert down from the take off and easily 60=70 (+?) out...

and my reaction was indeed followed almost immediately with a resounding as I contemplated what it would feel like to launch that shit.

Sorry for badgering ya into posting such a crappy pic Paul.

Yeah, I dunno man, maybe 60-70 if you measure directly down the surface of the hill from takeoff to landing...maybe. I only say this because I've hit 45-50ft table tops when I lived in Tahoe, and that's a long fuckin' way in and of itself...60-70 is redonkulous...all I know is that when I was at the apex of the air in the photo it definitely "felt" big. Looking down I know I was all of 20ft above my landing, but man 30 is pushing it...we'll call it 25.....

And I'm kinda glad you wanted me to post that shot, 'cause now I have a reason to go out there and get a much better photo of it, perhaps a video....now we just need a day like that again this winter....

Someone needs to bring a measuring tape next time. I've never gone that big off that ridge. I like the insurance of plenty of snow before hitting 20 footers. If you're right about the storm systems, I'll see everyone up there just after new years. My 6th sense is saying the week of Jan 4-10.

Yeah dude, I'm not doing it that big again unless we get another day of "hero snow" like that....it was just nice to know the consequences of sending it as far as you wanted to were going to be pretty low...honestly Nate, I don't think the drop was any more than around 20ft tops....I mean it was large, but not ridiculous by any means...

Ok... I'll recant and defer to those who've actually dropped more than 10 feet.

Still - a looong fuggin ways down there...

Shame it's gonna be 50* + today... here's looking froward to the start of the next cycle and another deep day.

Did anyone happen to see Cabby's snow report page today....ROFL

    "slope conditions:Fast" (read:icy as shit)

Bring your skates, not your skis if you're up there today. Keep your fingers crossed for snow....

thinkin tomorrow will be the icy day, today was just plain wet with a steady rain all day (still goin) mixed with periods of downpour, incredible change from just yesterday, flooding could beome an issue for some I bet...
we went up to the 'fae just to get out, had a beer but bagged skiin cuz it was pouring- and we're usually game to ski in anything- a trashbag toga day forsure...

had a sweet power hour on southpeak yesterday ~330-430 crouching at speed to duck into many still untouched pow stashes from beyond stagshead back toward I75, then a couple centerpunches, then back to stags etc, a nice 6lap powfix of daddytime in between skiin with the kids...

we'll need the snow with the cold temps comin again, hopin for a decent go tomorrow so the kids can get another day- they build skillz by the run seems like & we're not back up til feb...
hope the roads are good tomorrow night, downstate/real-life bound...

fugging 68 degrees here today. Rain, and more rain, with snow forecast for tomorrow. mid-west.

Anyway, Junior racecamp is supposed to start in 2 days. I hope there is not too much flooding at the base of the hill.

don't listen to fNs, his significant other told me he is always exaggerating lengths.

hope to make it up to Cabby inline with the next big snowfall.

Nate, you coming out to Swiss on Wednesdays?

63 degrees here. We even had a thunderstorm with about an inch of rain over 20 minutes and hail. Yesterday we had thundering wintery shit coming down.

Indy, yes, I'll be there on Wednesday nights. I'm looking forward to it.

I'm considering getting in the truck tonight and driving home (mqt mi) for a few days....
can I get an assessment of the fun potential in and around Marquette for the upcoming week?

    1) is there outdoor ice in town yet?...like the baseball field ice on presque isle by the village apts? How about drop-in/pickup hockey indoor? I can't find anything on the interwebs about either of those two things in mqt.

    2) how is mqtmtn skiing? will anyone ski with me? would I be a laughing stock if my smallest skis are 189 seths and nothing I own has any edgehold?

    3) $47 for mt. bohemia? are you shitting me? I can't afford that, but if I could would it be worth it?

I might head to swiss for NYE turns, I don't want to stray too far from home, I'm committed to a ~ 25 mile bike ride and chili cook off afterwards here in the summit city on New Years Day

Who knows if it would be worth it? There could be 16" of LES or it could be a bunch of rocks and schralpy crap. Hopefully it's the former later in the week. Bohemia's usualy either really good or kinda shitty.

Honestly, I can't see paying $47 for a day pass either. Does anyone who skis there ever not just buy the $99 season pass? I can't see paying over $35 for anything in the midwest. In fact I can't see paying over $25 for anything besides Bohemia in the midwest.

    1) Reminds me of the good 'ol days at NMU...we played a lot of puck on that outdoor rink until one of us wised up and started buying late night ice time at the rink in town....

    3) prior to this warm up, I would've said yeah Bohemia would be worth the $47, but now? I don't think so man...but I'm a long way from there, so take my thoughts for what you will. I just think it'll be one of those days at Bohemia where its "off"...they need another round of storms to soften things back up would be my guess. I'll bet there's a breakable crust layer with decent snow underneath it, but not $47 conditions...

Cheers to that Jer...except if I end up heading up to Bohemia this year I'll be doling out the funds for the full-price ticket. I never seem to have any cash when the pass deal rolls around and with that place being 10 hours away from MKG, I'd be surprised if I manage to get up there at all this year...but who knows, a big LES cycle has a funny way of making me do really irrational things...My only other thought is to see if I can Quid pro Quo Lonnie some Bohemia/Keewenaw footy for a ticket, but I don't know if that'll work or not. I don't know if he'll remember me from when I used to intern for Dave O. at Viosport....

Yeah, it boggles my mind that anywhere in the midwest can charge what they do...I understand that they essentially have the market cornered, but the fact that they charge as much here for shit snow, and shit vert as places with legit snow and legit terrain charge out west blows my mind...actually the fact that people regularly pay these rates is more mind boggling. I look for any deals I can to avoid paying full prices around here...it ain't worth it.

Well season pass prices aren't so bad around here. Day tickets are insane, especially for the product. Of course, snow making is inefficient and expensive. I go where the deals are, and typically don't go to places where my lift ticket is paying for gaper laden 400ft vert, a full service spa and 5 star restaurant.

Don't forget the slopeside ski patrol hospital to take immediate care of the gapers at said mountain....***cough*** Crystal ***cough***

Don't get me wrong the hospital is a nice thing to have at a "isolated" location like that, but if they didn't oversell the place, they probably wouldn't have the issues they do there....but WTF do I care, I refuse to go to Gaper Mountain....

MQT doesn't count...I rode there all through college, its still family owned, and I'd bet a substantial part of their income is derived from hundreds if not thousands of NMU students that take on a double major in "skiing/snowboarding" in addition to their regular academic classes...not hatin' on MM, I love that place, but you're comparing apples to Gaper Mountain...
