    The Berthoud Photo/Conditions Thread (2008-2009)

It's about that time again. Deep Days started one of these last year and I think it made sense. A Berthoud thread for pictures when a separate TR isn't warranted and a one stop place to look for condition updates. Here we go...

    November 15, 2008

Bring your rock skis. Our tracks on The Roll barely visible on far lookers right. It's thin over there.

Dayna making do in the Meadows.

    Me heading into the Flume.

Back on the east side. Dan finding surprisingly decent coverage in HHA.

It's thin. Maybe 10 to 18 inch snow pack at best where we were. Definitely hit some rocks. Didn't go up to Russell, but it looked like some wind loaded lines have filled in.

Hiked up to the A-frame in First Creek and saw a lot of big avalanche activity in the cirque. Three big slides with debris fields about as big as foot-ball fields. Frankenstein and the Hourglass are filling in nicely, as well as Hidden Chute behind the monolith.

Nice pics coloskier. I've been laying low in winter park and i didn't realize decent turns were to be had up there. Nice.

    Ullrdrool,
hey what's up? Monolith, hidden chute? Pretty much no one on here will know what your talking about, which makes me wonder... Who is ullrdrool? Anyway, my name is sam. maybe we know eachother.

What we experience in powder is the original human self, which lies deeply inside each of us, still undamaged in spite of what our present culture tries to do to us. Sorry, the monolith i'm refering to is the large rock formation that separates first creek into two drainages. There is a hidden chute behind this monolith that's pretty sweet. If you've seen any of the Marky-Mark videos, he usually has a segment of someone skiing the chute. It might have a proper name, but i've only heard it called the hidden chute. I'm Josh and ski on berthoud a lot with a big St. Bernard named Ullr. We should hook-up and ski sometime.

Thanks for the pics and the thread Carl.

Looks like the area will be 2-3 storms away after this week, but I'll be away soon and that's sure to bring a dump of epic proportions.

I just got back from Berthoud. There was a good 8' when we got there, and it was still snowing when I left around 12. A few faceshots were had.

    One from HHA:

In a few pockets, the new snow had formed a wind slab, and in steep spots, these pockets ripped out to ground facets. Very predictable and not very big, but they could catch you if you are off guard. And they will become more hazardous with more snow.

Damn, I didn't even notice you had your camera out. Email me that if ya would. My shots turned out mediocre as usual.

    FRD.

Dayna and I skinned up the west side a little before 4pm, still dumping.

Before we left I tried to get creative.

    I'm thinking Butler tomorrow.
