    Scanners on Patrol Frequency?

Can you get a basic police scanner to pick up local ski patrol frequencies?
It would be fun to listen in for rope drops.

Any chance you could ask those friends for those frequencies? (Since your location says Minden, NV, I'd assume they're Tahoe-area resorts.)

Just jack a radio from PHQ so then you could transmit too. Call in an emergency on one side of the ski area then cut ropes on the other. THis plan is flawless

Except for the part about theft of property and false reporting.

Some of the locals around here do it. It would be cheaper to buy a beer once in while for your favorite patroller to give you a text

does anyone know the snowbird frequency, I already have a police scanner for mischief but that would be awesome to know when areas are opening up and such.

some resorts are moving away from RF towards new systems that are 100% private cause they run on the cell networks.

Check ebay. 100 bucks can get you a programmable 2 way with frequency memories and repeater capabilities. The trick is finding out if the area uses UHF or VHF BEFORE you order. You can get a radio that will do both but it costs lots more. Transmission on licensed frequencies would be illegal. Actually any transmissions without some certificate or another would be illegal.

I've been wanting to do this for a couple years.... the Canyons is so spread out, It pays dividends if you know what's opening and when.

If any PC area mag has the Can-can frequency shoot me a PM. As payment I'll bring out some real VT beer for you ]

A little time searching this site should net you the frequencies you are looking for.

While programing your scanner put the DOT freq's in so you can have a jump on what is happening w/ the roads too.

Don't spend a bunch of money on a vhf or uhf, the goverment is mandating freq changes soon. It ties in with the tv analog signal change.

I didn't really look at that Utah frequency reference, but if you use the FCC site you will need to scan a ton of frequencies to pick out patrol from all the other mountain operations channels. It's no big deal but can take a bit of patience.

I kind of agree with Summit. I sometimes scan patrol to get a feel for what's going on if there's a delayed opening. Once the mountain is open I stop listening to them.

This only answers part of your post, but nonetheless...

For those that have/use FRS radios (you know, the cheapo motorola ones that families use), most ski area patrols monitor channel 9-11. If you need to call in a wreck or other emergency, try using that channel. Also, if you have a cell phone and reception, you can almost always call the main number of the ski area and ask to be transferred to Ski Patrol dispatch to report the problem. I've actually programmed the phone number of Alpine Meadows' dispatch room into my phone so I can call in wrecks if I don't have a radio. It works really well and they don't mind taking those calls.

Like others, I'm curious about the scanner idea. If nothing else, so I can listen for avy control updates in the morning to decide when to head to the hill.

I don't think Patrol would find it very funny if you started transmitting on their frequency or pranking them. Nor would any of the maggots I know.
