However many are in a shit ton.
We grabbed the DH54 grinder Carl and others recommended. No complaints as the combo makes a killer cup.

This may have been the best shot of espresso I’ve had. Galo Morales Gesha light roast, [emoji637]:[emoji637][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]] past first crack. [emoji638][emoji637] G in and [emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]]G out over [emoji637]:[emoji637][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]] including a [emoji637][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]] second pre-infusion. I think there’s still some room for improvement using these beans and definitely room to improve the roast. Maybe a touch less fine or drop the dose to [emoji638][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]]g and get more volume out. The fruit and floral notes popped! Gave a sip to my wife and she said, “is that just coffee”?
I wish I could read any of that and see the pic. Forum woes.

How many grams of water do you think you add when you steam milk?
It's significant.

just got a mischief workshop spring loaded cleaner (knockoff of the Weber spring clean)
this thing makes weekly thorough back flushing so easy

Finally bit the bullet and got an expensive hand grinder. Kingrinder K6. Also, finally used an aeropress to make "espresso". Holy shit, i though it would be crappy watery shot, but i ended up using James hoffman's recipe on the Aeromatic App and made a fucking phenominal "espresso". 18g coffee/90gram water. Im honestly shocked at what ive been missing just making pourovers all these years thinking that i didnt have the budget to make espresso... or espresso-like.
Used these beans from my garage roaster guy in Minnesota: https://cuckoocoffeeroastery.com/pro...u-womens-co-op I highly reccomend ordering from him if you want to try out different beans but dont want to pay $30 per bag, and be stuck with 1lb+ each time. I find it a really cost-effective way to try out new coffees while i make my DD brew with cheaper beans.
Insted of going by the time ( 30 sec) I bean just looking in the cup for about the right level of espresso and stop at that, I might pay attention to time but only to figure out what I might have done wrong this shot

Every once in a while it’s good to go to a quality cafe.
Edit. Image is still broken
Hey bean water friends. Looking at getting my first espresso machine. Trying to keep it “cheap” and small (limited counter space). Recommendations? I see Breville everywhere on my friend’s counters. Thoughts on going used?

Breville Bambino or Bambino plus meet both requirements - small, cheap(ish) and good quality shots (and steamed milk with the plus). I would take one of those over a used, older machine that would cost the same.
If you wana go really cheapest I have had a couple of Roma's they work ok I left the last one at an old gf's house

I was looking at the bambino or bambino plus. Thoughts on which one? Looks like the milk steamer and cleaning options are the main differences. Is that worth it for ~50% more? Or just suck it up and buy once, cry once?
Also, looks like I’ll need to pair that with a grinder? I’ll probably start with finding a local roaster that’ll grind beans (I assume that’s an option). Any recs on grinders at that similar budget/best value range?

Here is what AI has to say about it:
Breville Bambino vs. Bambino Plus: Which Should You Choose? If you're deciding between the Breville Bambino and the Bambino Plus, here’s a breakdown to help you choose the right espresso machine for your needs: 1. Milk Frothing Capabilities
- Bambino Plus: Features an automatic steam wand with adjustable temperature and texture settings, making it easier to achieve consistent microfoam for lattes and cappuccinos.
- Bambino: Equipped with a manual steam wand, requiring more practice to master milk texturing.
2. Design and Build
- Bambino Plus: Slightly larger with a 1.9L water reservoir and available in multiple colors, offering more aesthetic options.
- Bambino: More compact with a 1.4L water reservoir and typically available in brushed stainless steel.
3. Accessories
- Bambino Plus: Includes a metal tamper and a Razor precision dosing tool for precise coffee dosing.
- Bambino: Comes with a plastic tamper and lacks the Razor tool.
4. Price Point
- Bambino Plus: Priced higher due to its advanced features.
- Bambino: More budget-friendly, offering essential espresso-making capabilities without the additional features.
Conclusion If you frequently enjoy milk-based espresso drinks and prefer the convenience of automatic milk frothing, the Bambino Plus is a worthwhile investment. However, if you primarily drink espresso or are willing to manually froth milk, the Bambino offers excellent value. I'd 100% get a gaggia classic over a breville bambino, if you can afford the price increase. much, much better machine - 3 way solenoid, chrome plated brass group head, and a 58mm group are very nice features, plus you can install a PID in those gaggia machines and get god tier espresso very easily

A gaggia with PID is a better machine to nerd out with than a bambino or plus. That said the bambino’s will warm up in the time it takes to pull a blank shot instead of needing 20 minutes to temp stabilize which is a killer feature for home use when you only pull a few shots per day. I have a bambino non plus and feature worth upgrading for is the bigger water tank. If you want quick and easy shots buy a breville. If you want a hobby by a gaggia and start moding.
Don’t skimp on the grinder, I have a df54 and it works great if you stay on top of cleaning the chute.
Im a cheapass and this is what i plan to do when counterspace is freed up. You can likely get a used one for cheaper, and odds are they will even have the PID upgrade installed (otherwise easy $75 mod). Everyone on the internet says this is the way to go for entry level espresso machine.
I would pair that with a ~$100-$150 handgrinder. FWIW, i have a Kingrinder K6 ($100) and to grind 18g of espresso it takes me about 12-15 seconds. You arent going to be pulling a ton of shots back to back with a gaggia or any entry level espresso machine so there really is no need to get an automatic grinder.
So, for ~$550 you can get a full espresso setup that will produce shots 90% as good as a top of the line setup. Bonus is that your nice handgrinder can be taken with and used during travel/camping/ski area parking lot brewing.
