Good Read. thanks for the info!

I read Reichmann's piece when it came out.

It's amazing that the new lens is able to keep up with the increased resolution. Probably why they went with a reduced zoom range.

As a landscape camera at low ISO, the G10 seems like it will perform even better than the G9. As a possible ski camera, the reduced (again) frame rate and shorter zoom are not a good tradeoff just to get even higher resolution.

I'm really stoked to upgrade to something beyond my simple p+s for travel and adventure/sport photography, but I can't lug around a dslr and a video camera. G-9 seemed like the best option until now. That review made the G-10 appealling, but the slow frame rate is sad.

So what would be a better option? I've seen G-9s used on craigslists for around $400. And B+H has the G-10 at $485. Is there another camera that packs a punch in a small package?

ow wow - thx for that altabird - looks amazing and small

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/re...eras/lx3.shtml - this guy is going to do a comparative review

also has 24mm equivalent which is really wide angle

It's got useable ISO 400. What ISO is G10/G9 Useable to?

anyway i know what to look for in the christmas list

ugh - neither g10 nor the Lumix has optical viewfinder. I hate that.

G10 has an optical viewfinder, just small

Nikon P6000 is also in that class of camera

you wouldn't want to go above 100 with the G9. i assume the G10 is the same: they've crammed a lot of CCD in a very tiny space, noise is bound to happen.

i'm also very interested in the new lumix G1. the four-third technology looks really interesting just from the physical property point of view: more direct (non-refracted) light hitting the CCD:

Thanks for all the help. I eventually got the G10

    Reasons

    - I liked the G10 workflow having owned Canon point and shoots and being familiar with it
    - The G10 wide angle zoom was fine for what I needed
    - Really really want an optical viewfinder no matter how small and relatively useless it was.

Canon just dropped their prices on it btw so I ended up getting it for 499 Can

You just wanted to copy my awsome shots from the G7.

Look forward to seeing how much to decide to leave the DSLR at home now that you have the G10.

    Canon website has the answer:

    Canon G10
Movie: MOV (Image: H.264; Audio: Linear PCM (Monaural))

I see that the Canon S5 IS does stereo, but has an less efficient video format.
Movie: AVI (Image: Motion JPEG; Audio: WAVE (Stereo))

Note the presence of two mics on the camera body, which would be required for stereo.
