Also, I don’t blame her. Yelch.

Lots of skidoo rentals up for sale on KSL. 2up Tundra/expedition sleds but all 550f two strokes. I bought a buddies 1000cc nytro for cabin access and it tows (quietly!) a full sled w cooler, duffels, and another family great.

Appreciate the vote of confidence. Seems like a tow/cabin sled for next winter then get serious about something more fun the following winter. I've tried to get her into skiing (got her lessons definitely did not try and teach myself) and she isn't having it. My next thing is try and get some fish scale back country voile skis to get her out in nature touring around...she likes being outside with the dog, just need to get on some pow.

Mountain sled, anything newer then 2013 Ski-Doo Summit 850 will be fine, if get at 165 inch track, but a 154 is fine for necking in pow. I’ve doubled with the lady friend in shallow easy pow (~12in) on my turbo 175 just fine, anything deeper or more technical, we wouldn’t be able to do it. You’ll be able to get parts in Jackson at Jackson Cycle and Saw, they are a ski-doo dealer.

Trail sleds are something I know nothing about, so I’ll step out of that conversation.

I see mostly Ski-Doos around town, that’s what my friends have, and why I personally went with that. I am amazed every day at how durable my Ski-Doo is. I hear comments about how a Cat or Polaris wouldn’t survive the same crashes. I’m not sure if that’s just trash talk, or if there is truth behind it.

How remote? Is there a road? Is the road maintained in any way in the winter?

Trail sleds work on, well, existing trails. If you're going to be making your own trail, get a mountain sled, and expect to have some learning experiences on your commute. There was a fairly comprehensive list of recommended mountain sleds from 2010+ posted in this thread around this time a yr ago. If the main function is A to B and a wife is involved, reliability would be my first priority. "Beater" and reliability usually don't go together.

It is on a road (well in the summer) and maybe .5 mile is maintained by other neighbors (i think? I've never been in the winter). Rest I assume is not touched. Our place is at the midpoint on a loop road so the least amount of traffic will come through there. The rest I assume is not maintained and not visited frequently but I have no idea tbh.

I hear ya on reliability. We will typically be leaving slc at about 4 pm, arriving around 8 pm on Thursdays and a breakdown at 9 pm 3-5 miles out at 0 or -20 is not desirable. However once you reach the place the whisky tastes great and it's fun to reflect and makes a great story many years down the road . Snowshoes carried on board would be a must.

any clue who made the post so I can search it?

There isn’t one post, but many over the past few years. People ask a very similar question, and everyone responds just about the same. Maybe if someone gets motivated they could make a summary to be pinned somewhere.

If reliability is needed a 4 stroke is best. Local tour company has many doos with 20,000kms.

Anyone got a short riser for a 2016 Summit X with stock bars (1-1/8")? Can't find anything OEM available and aftermarket is $$$ (also not exactly sure what height I want other than know I want to go shorter so don't want to spend too much with the probability of wanting future change).

Got more face shots on my sled over the last 2 days than I've had in years. We got almost 2' between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Kids have been going full on apeshit. Check out the 7yo learning to jump! Click image for larger version.

It was really nice! All the sunny exposures domed over and we had two feet on top. Hero snow.

So I snowmachine home 4 mi everyday. I use both touring sleds and a mtn sled depending on conditions (deepness of snow) personality I think the Polaris 440 or 550 are bomber engines late 90's early 2000's. They are usually found on the cheap and will get the job done. I got mine from a XC ski resort so they already had hi miles, and now I am over 8000mi and no problems. They work great towing and riding double But if it's over 18" of fresh they are hard to brake trail. A 4 stroke is even heavier that's why I don't ride them. But I am sure they work good but you also need more cc's to get the same power out of that 4 stroke.
For a mtn sled just look into something without trailing arm suspension and few more cc's. That should brake trail on a road just fine. Sledding when it's that cold also is challenging so get some bar mits if your like fingers and always have good lighting and headlamp for that night riding. Never forget the snowshoes...

Sweet setup, I've had a couple days on bikes this year and I am hooked. Hoping to set up something for next season.

    Anyone do a spring order?

I just put a deposit on a Lynx boondocker 4100

Stoked. That should get me through the next 5 years and then transition to an electric snowmobile.

You are such a yuppie...ooh look at me, I gotta Euro Ski Doo. I heard they are good from Jumping. If I don't get pictures of you sending the Buff Pass cat road in full roadie kit, your money will be wasted.
