I'm just a simple girl trying to make my way in the universe...
I come up hard, baby but now I'm cool I didn't make it, sugar playin' by the rules
If you know your history, then you would know where you coming from, then you wouldn't have to ask me, who the heck do I think I am.
Well, there goes my battleship and now I'm seriously intrigued. How do you pull this off?
The season passes/ticket deals are easy and I'm guessing you've got friends out west to crash with but how do you swing that kind of time off? Do you have an unconventional/extremely flexible job?
As others have said, a lot depends on your family situation. If you're single, the flying out West option is a lot more palatable. If not, the best bang for your buck and your best chance at quality skiing is going to involve some sort of share house or ski club north of Killington. If you are close to Waterbury, VT, you are withing 30 minutes of 5 of the 6 snowiest mtns on the EC, in the form of Sugarbush, MRG, Bolton, Stowe and Smuggs. If you're willing to commit to some costs on the front end for the housing component, it makes it a lot cheaper and a lot more convenient on the back end - there are always deals available. And don't believe the stupid claptrap you read on the board about lousy skiing on the EC. If you know where you're going, have the requisite skillz, and follow the weather closely, you can pretty much assure yourself of at least 75% powder days in the EC trees. Those who would dispute that figure do so out of ignorance.
I live in White Plains, NY and am always looking to get into VT for the weekend. I have a WRX Wagon with a box if anyone has places to stay. Always try to get to Jay 2 or 3 times a year.
Still looking to go up to Killington for at least a day on November 15th or 16th, may rent a car myself... I'll post up closer to that weekend.
Count me in for trips, JONG though I am. I have a car and live 1/2 hour west of the city. Day trips are usually easier for me to justify, but sweet weekends in VT would be great. I tried to get to Tuckerman's last year but couldn't get it together. That would ALSO be sweet. Is there anyone around here who does AT in the region? I'm putting together an AT rig and want to get into it this year.
I've been living on the EC so long, I've gotten a bad case of lowered expectations. IF the snow is decent, then local NY areas like Plattekill are AOK. I'll even go to Hunter, although the conditions there were awful every time I went last year. Maybe with the sour economy, Hunter's crowds will ease up this year and the snow won't get so scraped up. (That's what happened in the late 1980s and early 1990s). But, Vermont is much more fun.
I'm coming off a broken leg in mid September and should be ready to go by Thanksgiving.
I've got some naxos but I don't have BC gear unfortunately. Maybe I'll manage to get some "training" in this season so I can actually take advantage of my gear.
I'll definitely be doing a few trips north out of Stamford. Pretty easy for city bound people without cars Metro-North express to Stamford. Avoid all the nastiness of dealing with traffic out of NYC. Plus trains like the 6:07P express have bar cars so you can chill a little and have a cold one before heading north. Depending on how the storms come in I'll do either day trips to Magic and resorts south. I usually shoot for resorts north of Sugarbush. Depending on traffic I can usually be at the Canadian Border within 5 hours. About the same amount of time it takes me to fly west and I can operate on my own schedule.
I try to split my days between east and west since they both have there own unique appeal. Weather, work and cash usually dictate my choices.
Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now.
What's your schedule like, S2S? Normal 9-5 5x/wk? I'm asking because I have a super flexible schedule this year and I'm hoping to do as much of my skiing as possible on weekdays. Even if it's weekend, that still sounds like a good plan.
I'm also putting together a proper touring set up for the first time. I'd like to ski mount Marcy and some other Adirondack peaks. There seems to be plenty of cheap places to stay up there. It would be great to head up with someone with experience in the area, or just touring in general. If I can't find anybody, I might hire a guide some weekend to get some intel on the area.
I will definitely go to Mount Washington this year. I've been boot packing there several times, but would like to explore it more thoroughly with skins. I know some experienced backcountry skiers in the area, including a cousin who would let me and one or two others crash on her couch/ floor. She also makes her own beer and wine. I have no car at the moment, so in the spring, if I haven't bought one yet, I'll be looking for some rides in exchange for a place to stay and possibly an amateur guide.
My schedule sucks until February. Most weeks I work Saturdays, but I will play hookey for powder. Starting in February I have weekends off. Do any of the Catskills areas have tree skiing worth a damn? I can't wait to get out there. I'm driving my girlfriend crazy.
Just signed papers on a new place in mid-town... Bringing my year-old Subaru Outback with me. I'll be throwing the box on the roof within the month and am happy to shuttle people north with me as I head up, let me know.
Hey, I'm Djing at a bar in North Brooklyn on November 14th. No cover. Cheap booze. I will probably play some old Greg Stump movies on the tv.
Volunteering this as a meeting spot for NY Mags. I'll post in Summit's later on?
It's off the Graham stop on the L train (second stop in). EDIT:, its the 3rd stop in, duh

GMan, sounds good...
I was going to drop in and say that i'd like to get together too for some bar roll call. I usually ski with my brother in central VT at MRG/da bush. I'm totally down for day trips to Plattekill on powder days, Touring in the daks, or long walks on the beach. I basically only hit this site to check out what samdaman is up to at Stowe, but please keep me in mind.
I have access to wheels on occasion, and my friend Justin hauls people up to southern VT to some motel that sleeps him for 30/night. I think I'm also getting an Epic pass. 575 till 11/15 no blackouts at vail, bc, keystone, A-basin, breck, and did I mention A-Basin??? Have you seen that wall there?
Also, I live in north brooklyn and I'm going to start stalking Daddy's this afternoon. We should turn that bar into the fkn base lodge.
just wanted to get in on this...
looks like i'm missing the event at Daddys to roadie for my friends band until 11-19, but it's a great bar and I wish I could go. My work schedule is *sporadic* until january, so I wanted to add my name to the list of midweek-able skiers. If Plattekill get's hit with another 30 inches, it's on.
Otherwise, weekend trips to VT mostly Sugarbush and MRG are the plan. I could also be convinced to do Stowe or Jay, Burke, or Whiteface, coupons and lodging, and rides all dependent. But mostly, if the snow is going to be good, i am very interested. I have a BC setup and can also be convinced to camp. Thunderbolt for a daytrip? Let's do it. Mt Washington for sure in the Spring.
Oh yeah, I live in Bushwick and have access to a car sometimes and remain highly motivated to ski. Looking forward to skiing with all of you.
any of you mags on facebook/myspace, the reason I ask is it would be nice to put some faces to names on here. As far as skiing goes, I'm tentatively planning to go up to vermont the second weekend in december. Plan would be to catch a ride with my buddy friday sometime ski saturday/sunday and drive home late sunday night. Unfortunately, my buddy drives a truck so I'm not sure I can offer rides at this point, but for those of you who have transportation I can talk to my other friend who we stay with(family owns the place in rutland) about the possibility of letting some mags crash(free of charge, just chip in some for booze).
I'm currently unemployed so I'm trying to hold off on any big trips until I have some sort of income, but assuming I get a restaurant job to tide me over for a bit, I'd be down for day trips to pretty much anywhere. I'll even throw down for gas etc.
edit: remove personal info
Still hoping to have a Mag event on the 14th at that bar that I'm djing, Daddy's. We should probably get there earlyish (8?) if we want to actually be able to find eachother, and be able to hold conversation, as it gets drunk and crowded later in the night.

I cant make the 14th as its my last weekend before moving up but keep me posted in the future... Long shot, but anyone on here working at Paragon having just stopped patrolling at hood?
14th still on at the above mentioned bar, but we should keep meeting up. At least we have infinite bars to choose from. The weather is looking typically shitty for the coming weeks, winter is not in a huge hurry right now.
