In either case could I get a ride with you?
Chiming in...
Just moved back east after a 2 season stint in JH and just under 2 years (1 winter) in Milwaukee. In Manhattan with a car at my Mom's in upstate NY (Albany). Looking to get some weekend trips in up in VT (Jay, MRG, Stowe) as well as some wknd flights back west (likely SLC). I may bring the car down for a wknd or two when the season really kicks in but as of now I'm thinking train upstate and then drive up to VT.
Am also open to sharing rides and chipping in for gas, beer, food. Very familiar with Stowe, skied Jay a bit in college and MRG here and there.
It ain't about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward - Rocky
Thinking of heading up Saturday for a day mission... love the thought of chasing snow for day/over nighters to VT. Keep me posted, my car is gassed and ready to roll.
Been lurking here for a bit.. most talk seems to be for vermont. Wanted to see if anyone here ever goes up to whiteface. I'd like to go up there for a weekend if the slides open up...likely late Feb/Early March. I'm in NJ, about 20 miles out of the city, but its an easy ride from Penn Station on the train and could drive up there w/people.
I wear crocs for the style, not the comfort.
where's a decent place relatively close to nyc to try on AT boots, stopped by paragon today and they had like two pairs.
Chatton:
VT is closer than Whiteface and the skiing is about the same. The slides opening are really hard to predict, but Feb-Mar is your best bet. I work in Albany a few times a year and will usually rent a car and head up to skin in the ADKs or hit Whiteface.
The only great thing Whiteface has going for it is the vert. This year I'll probably give Hickory a try.
If you have AT gear and like skiing slides there are many you can ski in the ADK park - you could even skin up the road on the backside of Whiteface and hit their slides. There's often a decent risk of avys on the slides up there, however.
Gman:
There is nowhere good around here for AT gear. Definitely wouldn't buy from Paragon.
If you can wait for February Stratton VT has an event for ski shop employees called the on snow demo day. It's mostly Alpine stuff, but BD, Garmont, Scarpa, and a few others have booths and you can try the gear on snow for free (if you claim your from a shop).
Skiaholic:
This winter will be a bitter pill to swallow after Jackson no doubt. You can take the Megabus to Albany too and it is dirt cheap if you get your tickets in advance. It's usually on time and not crowded.
I'm thinking about taking the bus up to Stratton or Okemo this weekend for a day unless someone is up for driving from the city. ml242: you still out for the weekend?

Gman
the new and improved EMS on Broadway and spring has 6 or 7 AT boots, and a couple different skis to fondle.
trying to remember...
Couple of BD boots plus some scarpa and garmont, don't remember what else. Couple different BD skis and Icelantics, maybe a Karhu or some other telly ski as well. Cool little ski shop area on the second floor. Certainly not the shit show Paragon is.
Thanks GM...I'm mostly looking to do it for a weekend trip just to hit the slides. I don't really have touring equipment, but do have a beacon/shovel/probe for side/slackcountry stuff out west. Just thinking some other people might be interested in hitting up what looks to me like it could be the best lift accessed skiing in the east. But I've never done them and want to give them a shot. But i agree, for a normal weekend, VT makes more sense since it is a bit closer.

...VT also gets more snow.

Yeah, we're probably all curious to hit the slides when they're open. Chances are you'll have to watch conditions and be ready to go on a moments notice as they don't announce they're opening the slides until just before it happens. I'm not sure if they have even opened in the last couple of seasons.
And if they do open and you're about to drive 6 hours to Whiteface you ought to post something here
Angel slides just above Marcy Dam last spring...

Hitting Stratton tomorrow on the Emilios ski bus.
And how could this not entice you:
"The Sunbowl will be a lively place when it opens this weekend. Ride the Sunrise Express early Saturday morning and enjoy all 37 corduroy covered acres of the Sunriser Supertrail."
Alright, so we know Stratton is lame, but it's the best bus option in town for Saturday. If there is any cover in the woods you'll find me there all day.
If anyone wants to join, let me know.
Likely hitting Windham for the day tomorrow... are they seriously calling for 5-10 inches tonight?
Heading up to VT but wanted to spam one last time about the dinner at Monkeytown.
I went last night and thought the program was awesome. The Herzog ski jumping film plays with sound, but the owner djs over the other ski stuff making the event more ambient. I was able to talk to two non-skiers who also had a really good time, in a way they might not of if they were simply watching a movie in a dark room with the movie track blasting away. the food was all excellent, and i'm hungover from the drinks plus two whisky's.plus the raffle.
so if you're stuck in nyc, you should consider going.....

anybody been up to belleyare recently? is it skiing decently?
thinking about playing hookie tomorrow and driving up.
might be up for a hunter trip wednesday if anyone is down
hey ripvanwinter - i hit up belleayre this past sunday and have to say it was pretty fun. they had picked up a few inches during the week so it wasn't just the manmade stuff. if only they'd get a foot or so, then the trees would be skiing nicely...
in any case - i have car and i call in sick on powder days, any NYC peeps who are into commando raids please keep me in mind...
fort greene. friday could work - if its snowing i'd like to think i'm going![]()
depending on how work/weather develops this week I'm into thursday or friday
ended up hitting belleayre solo a couple weeks ago. It was nice to get out in the fresh air for the day. Anything ungroomed was really painful, though.
i also wanted to chime in and highly recommend the ski shop at the EMS at broadway and spring sts - a selection of black diamond, scarpa, and garmont AT boots plus some volkl, movement, and BD skis hanging around. i think everything is currently 20% until supplies last...
