haha yea alta is flat like others were saying try deer valley. no intensely steep lines fill in when the base is over 100 inches. haha oh my god dude. you should go put one of those slope measure things on the last slope you thought was 60 degrees, i bet your 10 degrees shy of that.

Everyone does realize this is a troll and an alias just having fun right?

From the looks of those 3D maps, the East Wall at the Basin is the radist thing around....too bad it doesn't open till spring.

Lol, you guys are ridiculous. You all do realize the difference between a question and a statement don't you?

And don't take the measurements up with me, take them up with the Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol.

If you get past the out-of-control gaper douchebags skiing over little children on the High-T, I'd say you'll be more than pleased wth Alta.

Minus the attitude, the place is pretty fucking awesome.

Someone posted about Snowbird having top to bottom sustained vertical but I guess he deleted his post. You know, correct me if I'm wrong but I don't really see this. Yes I see a RIDGELINE that runs top to bottom which provide options top to bottom of steep lines but it does not appear those lines are all that long and sustained. It just looks like instead of them having a lateral ridgeline that provides steep vertical (but short) runs like at Mammoth or Squaw, they instead of a vertical ridgeline, thats all.

I also am becoming less inclined to go by those 3dmaps. They make both Alta and Snowbird appear flat, it makes Squaw look they they only have 1 or 2 steep parts and it makes Taos look like the steepest resort in the country.

    I will offer this
and i am an Altaholic since the 80's

I was sitting, well standing actually, on Beale Street a few weeks back with some skiers who all have skiied most of the resorts of the west.
Most of us even lived at a few for a few years.
    One is even sposnred
all 4 of us when I posed the question 'where would you live for a year, if skiing was the only determining factor."

Basically you have decent lodging and food for the year and can ski all year anywhere in North America.

Noone hesitated, we all said Jackson.
I posed the question individually, thinking I was the only one that held that opinion.
    Unanimous
    Jackson.

This response surprises me. I too love Jackson, but the snows just not there like it is in Utah....for steeps though....Jacksons got it going on.

Thanks for posting this though...always good to see other decisions.

I hate grizzlies....... I have no doubt that Jackson is the place to be though. The thing about Jackson for me though is at the moment having a sizable population nearby really is a neccissity which is why I'm looking at Reno and Salt Lake.... Think I'm driving out to Salt Lake next week

3 seasons in jackson for me, way to many to count at Alta.

    I miss Jackson.

I went to Alta once with our High School ski club for spring break. We stayed in PC but went to Alta for a day, at least those who could ski, and I must admit, it is way scarier than Colorado. I was on the High-T, and coming from Chicago, I got yelled at because I wanted to walk up to it and boot it. Apparently, they dislike people walking. So, doin't do that.

Go to Alta if you like to be scared. I have never been that scared in Chicago as when I was riding Wildcat lift and fell off near the first pole. My friend and I were joking around and I fell off. Thankfully, there was 24" of fresh powder to fall on!

I have another good Alta story too. When we were visiting I did finally get to the High-T. I didn't have good wax, I think I used the blue wax instead of red, but anyway, on the high-t I was going too slow. It was a big powder day and there was still a ton of fresh powder skiing going on. So, I'm moving slow on the hight-t and I had to use my poles to traverse/slide (whatever) and I ended up stabbing the lady behind me. Anyway, she screamed out in pain and her boyfriend was behind her and he got sooo pissed at me. He came up next to me, but on the high side, and pushed me downhill into a tree. I checked out of both skis and stubbed by middle toe. I'll never forget that day for the rest of my life. so, don't use your poles on the high-t either. Or was it the low-t, fuck I can't remember.

Wow this is getting funny. My 2 cents: I ski Squaw and love it, but for sustained vert not much beats High Rustler. That's all time on a pow day. Squaw has Nose to fingers or West face, but thats not sustained for 2k. Both places are great for different reasons. There is no doubt you will get schooled wherever you go.

Everybody knows Alta is the exclusive playground of big talking assholes from New England. Why would you even want to fuck with that shit.

jackson and altabird usually get the same storm cycle, besides the lake effect that altabird gets. sometimes alta gets nailed, sometimes jackson get nailed, but they usually get the same storms. scope soe epic alta/jackson TRs and look for a corresponding one on the same day at the other resort. just from the trailmap, jackson looks like the funnest place in the world, but its super expensive to live in, and having ski-in/out spoils you (working at any alta lodge).

the bird has more steeps than alta (yes alta has eagles nest and the rest of that area). alta gets 1-2" more than the bird per foot based on altitude/stalling of clouds on ridge top. tons more beaters at the bird, but there is more fun terrain at the bird for the beaters to not find. same amount of rippers at both about, but more terrain at the bird so it takes longer to track out. you can't make a wrong choice, now quit asking questions that are asking to get ripped on.

Hey, Warren Miller, if you’re serious about the long season stick with the Maritime snowpack.
