Was in Special Tickets this AM about 10, and a guy came in and was talking to the guy in line right in front of me so I heard the whole conversation. Said a patroller broke his femur on Hogback and had to be downloaded via the Funi.
Guess there's much more to the story. Vibes!

I ended up at N* for the afternoon cause skiing low angle pow is still better than skiing no pow. It was good!

    Condolences and Prayers.

It sucks because all year we hope and dream about dumps like these and then this shit happens. Definitely makes you wonder!

Onto brighter subjects, I have already called in sick for tomorrow. With that said, any thoughts on Alpine, think they will even try to get any of the goods open?

anyone going to be at the wood tommorow? ill be there in my "deep snow locator clothes", ie bright yellow jacket or and cool red pants on line prophets. given the recent chain of events, probably better to ski in groups. if its not too cloudy/snowy ill be brining a camera around, more angles the better!

Bring a GPS or get a map of the backroads up here. You can take them to Baxter. (I'm laid up in Colfax right now with my wrecked leg and bored) And then Old 40 from Cisco to Truckee, although I wouldn't advise that because it's seldomly plowed in REALLY big ones like it looks like this is.
that's what we had. 80 was closed and they were turning traffic around at Alta. we hit up the gps in the car, and the iphone to navigate back roads up through baxter and jump back on 80. this was all around 3 pm. the roads were fine, and then we got up to the accident over the summit and it was bad. so they shut down W-bound 80 and had us drive E bound on the W bound lane for 5-8 miles and then switch back over. on bay bridge @ 12:30...pull into Truckee 6:30 with a pit stop @ ikeda's for burger awesomeness.

it is worth it. i was giddy with excitement until a dude told us about the squaw patrol guy. best wishes to the his family and the squaw family.

When you're done, can you roll your blower over to the Poon Palace down the street to clear our driveway too. Ramming my car 5-6 times into it at 2am sort of did the trick but the stupid snow got refilled overnight.

PS check yo txt msgs foo.

This is very sad, condolences to the squaw family. Has anyone seen any report by Squaw patrol or the Sierra Avi center that talks in more detail about the avalanche? I am wondering if it went in the new storm snow sliding on the March 1-2 crust, or stepped down to the January crust, like SAC said might happen. Hard to believe that 8-9' crowns were all new storm snow, but maybe with the wind it could have been.

yea, have fun fugger. I think I will get to test the bad wheel at Sierra this afternoon though on my way back up the hill.

If gville doesn't work out today, I'm with you on it tomorrow. Actually either way I'm on it tomorrow, I just hate crossing your tracks after you have already center punched P.L.

kirkwood wed report....after being trapped in the van with snow up to mid-window

for those on the other side of the road closures, its a special day here.

last night both roads were closed from around 2.30 to 8 pm. even a bus was stuck at the gate.

room prices rose with demand as a line formed at the lodge.

woke up to find snow mid-way up the windows, unable to open any doors. that was after shoveling around the car at noon,3pm, and 6pm. finally got free by using a whistle and the help of a dog-walker and the shovel i had left outside the door.

its now clear, no wind, very DEEP, 20 deg dry snow at 6% (according to the boss) but no lifts running yet at 10.20

we have plenty of dog food, treats, zapotan etc. for the party

    cheers

Living vicariously through this thread and web cams at the moment.

Left Berkeley at 4pm yesterday. Spent the night in the car on 80, 3 miles east of Gold Run. Just now made it to Truckee for a sandwich at wild cherry. Off we go.

Highway 4 is not Tahoe. Bear Valley has two big secrets, Grizzly Bowl, and Highway 4. The secret to highway 4 is it never closes. It has no avalanche paths, and is in the forest = no whiteouts. It's also two lanes, which means the yahoos can't speed as much and cause accidents. Not closed means resort employees can get to work and open the resort, while Tahoe resort employees are still stuck in their driveways.

Don't worry, Grizzly usually takes a day to open.

So pumped for this weekend. Hopefully everyone leaves me some. Although, with some sweat and finesse, I am sure I can find some goodness at Alpine on Saturday. This will be the 2nd weekend I have friends visiting from EC. I felt ashamed the first time friends visited in mid-Jan.

This go around - well, the Sierra Crest will deliver

Sinecure, Alpinedad, Stormday, et al - I assume you will be up this weekend? (Especially after you all missed last Friday )

I drank an obnoxious amount of WC coffee this weekend on breaks during avi course at ASI. That place delivers...

Apologies for the cross-posting spam, but... We just got some Alpine Meadows deals on our site ... $51 for this Sunday, only 15 available (13 now, since Gonzo was purchaser #1). Figure it matches up well with the snow! Deal Here

I don't think I've ever seen 4 close. My friend from Sac is always amazed at the lack of crowds/traffic when he comes up with us.

And you're right, not only is Griz closed today, it looks like even the backside is still on hold. That's good news for me.

I was just about to add that - maybe I'll see ya there tomorrow.

say hi if you see me - pic from last Tuesday at Kirkwood
since then there's been enough snow to bury me standing up!

sorry about the low angle inbounds photo - hard to even come close to the great stoke usually here.

Today was NOT the epicness that I hoped for. Too deep and too heavy to even get moving in most places, and I had already observed pinwheeling and several point releases at 8K+ before 9am.

Good news is it just bought us at least another 2 weeks of spring corn.

I was checking out the AM webcam a little while ago. They dropped the rope on Summit 6 at 12:08pm today. It was kind of cool, and sad to be sitting and watching as the full corral of people surged forward. Wish I'd been there.

    Mt. Rose 3-4.09

The Rose was VEWY VEWY GOOD today. Everthing filled way in. About 16"

I waited at the Chain for the Chutes to open this morning they were about an hour late. They just kept doing Ski cuts to make us safe,

My first Run out of the Sluff path was $$$$ It was sunny/ Noone was in front of me / The POW was light and near 3 FEET DEEP in the Chutes. This last storn covered everything. It was a good day

Saw Jim S drop a little line off Castle rock and then race off into the distance.

No pic's but hey no way you stop for the camera today
