Thread: Velocity deep V wheelset?

    Question Velocity deep V wheelset?

I'm looking to upgrade my wheelset on my Pista. Was looking at the Velocity deep V sets. Any beta on these? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Should I be looking at something else?

    What say you?

The best part about Velocity rims is the colors they come in - wood grain, even sperm. They are a good rim though - I don't have any complaints about mine, and there's a reason so many messengers run them.

    ^^^ Nice ride...

Funny, a messenger acquaintance of mine was the one recommending them. I am a JONG since I just started getting into fixed gear bikes so I thought I would ask the collective.

Dude, Rontele is probably out on the corner turning tricks. There is no way he could get in on this at this time.

    Ummm....
you'll need a matching top tube pad also...

    wow, you've got irony down...

ah, forget it it's to late and everything that could been said, has... much better than I could.

you better make the front one an aerospoke though... I hear they completely improve your bikes handling.

Oh and once you get them you'll need to sell your pista on craig's list for way more than it's worth

those two are lame to, but the best I got...

besides the aerospokes there is no hipper wheel, and that hipness level has driven up the price. You can get a better wheel for less

Well if you look at the original post, I am not 100% set in stone on this wheel set. I asked if it was a good wheel set and then I asked for alternative suggestions. Telling me I can get something better for cheaper and then not telling me what to look into doesn't really help me much. But thanks for playing...

And those that actually know me here, know I am pretty fucking far from hipster. I like the jokes though, especially the white belt one.

I nice wheelset would be dura ace or ultegra front hub laced 3x to a Mavic Open Pro rim. For the rear go with a Dura Ace high flange track hub(or something similar) laced to an Open Pro. If you are doing a ton of city riding, use brass nipples. Pick an apporpriate spoke based on your weight and intended riding. This wheelset will be lighter than the Deep Vs(which are not light at all) and will be completely bomber.

Deep Vs are great if you must have color on your bike, but the shape does not really give you any aero advantages to speak of, and it's a heavy rim. If you are a big guy they are good, but an open pro will be just as nice. Plus rims that come from mavic generally have tighter tolerances than those from Velocity from the ones I've built.

You could use Phil hubs too if you want to spend more money.

There will be a collegiate cycling swap meet coming up in a month or two in Boston, so you can pick up stuff there, and Mavic usually has a warehouse sale in the fall as well.

Check out the Fusion rims from Velocity. Way lighter than the Deep V, but still pretty strong. I have a set with American Classics hubs- 24 front, 28 rear. Excellent wheelset.

I have above mentioned wood grain deep Vs on my fixed gear, and I'm quite happy with them. Im a pretty tall guy, and they have held up to my stupidity fairly well. I have noticed that in stiff winds they tend to act like a kite, which is kind of annoying.

I saw em and had to get them.. I put them on a dark brown SE lager frame, and they look really good. Stylish, yet not to hipsterish.

Awesome wheels - kind of the industry standard in durability.
