Mouth guards do not prevent concussion. There is no evidence to show they do anything except prevent dental/ oral injury.

are you sure he said no pain meds? or did he say no advil. Advil causes bleeding in your brain during concussions, or at least that's what I have been told.
Generally no ibuprofen, aspirin or alieve due to blood thinning effects. Rx pain meds or CNS meds should be discussed with your doc.
OTC pain meds like Tylenol/ acetaminophen in limited doses are preferred but not to cover your headaches to allow for participation in mental or physical activity

Exactly what Vinman said. avoid advil and other meds of that nature. Pain meds should be discussed with your doc.
I had been on an off script pain meds for various sports related surgeries, so my doseage was considerably higher than someone who has not built a tolerance. That may have been why I was told to start stepping down then off for the ST.
I eventually went back on them, but was clear for the immediate time after.
Again, because narco pain meds have various effects on the brain and how it perceives pain, they should be discussed in detail with a doc before you take them. if you take them now w/o a doc, make sure you tell him bc brain is not something you want to screw around with. (i did, missing a big chunk of my life)
