The Video Editing Thread (systems, software, faq, etc)

Since one of these doesn't already exist I figured I could get the ball rolling.

So, I am looking to purchase a Mac-based system. Looking at the Mac Pros is daunting cause of the high price tag. If I plan to edit HDV, what do I really need to have and what can I skip out on, or add later?

Whats the minimum amount of RAM that people with experience deem necessary? I don't want to sit around while my computer renders for 24 hours, but I also don't need a system worthy of NASA. Where's the common ground?

One last question. What other brands of monitors do you recommend? It appears that the Apple ones are just retardedly expensive.

    thanks

I edit HDV on 2 different Macs and they both work good. 1st gen Macbook Pro 15 inch with 2.16 GHz intel core duo chip and 2g ram, and a G5 with 6g ram that also works just fine. Assuming you are talking about using FCP to edit? Almost any new MacPro or Macbook Pro will do the trick. But you will definitely save time rendering with more horses under the hood.

edit: What about a RAID card. Is it necessary?

It's not necessary, but it would allow you to internally mirror your files for added protection.

Hmmmm. Looks like I am gonna go with the MacBook Pro. I would like a desktop, but having a portable editing system should suffice until I am more liquid, and this way I can take it with me on storm chases and whatnot.

Mmmkay a bump for the edit whores out there.

I cut 24p DV footage on a custom built PC using AdobeCS3 (soon to be CS4), altho I used Avid Media Composer until the instability brought on by my "inadequate" video card just pissed me off to a point I couldnt work with it any more.

    Specs:
AMD Athalon 64 X2 2.66GHz (want a Phenom quad core)
    3GB DDR2 ram
    80GB system drive
    500GB media drive
    2TB remote server for backup
XFX Ge-Force 8600GT (Avid wants a Quadro FX 550 or better, total BS)
Creative SB Audigy 5.1 card with ASIO drivers
    Windows XP Pro

It works great for editing what I edit, and I'm able to do some pretty advanced graphics, VFX and color grading with it.
