Today, back on the board...wasn't pretty. No pow. Hard pack would be a good description, nevertheless it felt good to strap in again!

Cardiac arrest on the afternoon of January 15. Just returned from a little split-boarding in the BC with a good buddy. I walked in the front door, stood in the kitchen and then collapsed. My heart stopped. Breathing stopped. Dead on the floor. Gone in a split second. Wife was home thankfully. Dialed 911. EMT's at the door in 3 minutes. CPR and in between they took the paddles to me - 7 times in total. 4 times on the kitchen floor and 3 in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Woke the next day, after surgery. 5 Stents.

8 days later I am home. Even returned to work, part time, the day after I left hospital. Now? Diet. Exercise also, but I was already quite active. I asked the doctor how long would it be before I can return to snowboarding.... he said "give it a week." Actually waiting for my chest / sternum / ribs to heal. Kinda sore in that area.

Many thanks to all that helped save my sorry ass. My wife, the EMTs, the doctors and nurses. Thanks to all who expressed concern, I didn't know that many people cared. Quite humbling.
That is some crazy shit man. I am super glad you got a second chance. Take it easy for a while and be good to yourself.

Yep, a month tomorrow. I have lost an incredible 30lbs since that day, most of that a direct result of the heart attack. Loss of appetite and initial weakness from the ordeal. I have been on a strict diet since being released from hospital... getting used to it and am indeed feeling much, much better. Going to have to buy new clothes soon, am sporting the baggy look at the moment.

Hit the hill again last Friday while it was snowing, put a big smile on my face. Rocked it up to pre-incident speeds and terrain, wow, just nothing quite like it, is there? I hope to make it up to Targhee and BS before the end of the season, the bc will have to wait till next year.... :-(

My wife has been a super-hero through this whole thing. The Valentine card she gave me this morning made my eyes kinda moist, and I am not a big believer in this type of commercial BS...I guess it was what she wrote in it that hit me.... She said I was her "Once in a lifetime friend......"

She confided in me her thoughts about almost losing me. She said "It was so scarey, they said you might not make it when they loaded you up for the trip to the hospital.... what would I do without you? I would be so, so lonely".... Wow, what do you say to something like that? All I can do.... is to do those things that will hopefully keep me around for a while longer, like 30 (or more) years!!

Let me know when you come up to Big Sky and your lift ticket is on me dude. Just shoot me a PM.

Glad to hear that you're back out on the board and loving it. I can only imagine the kind of new perspective on life that something like this would give both you and your family. Glad to hear you're recovering and that your wife is such a champ.

Wow....found this thread last night and finished it up this morning. unreal pics and life LBL. i'm not real big on therapy per se but the wife is a therapist and just started doing EMDR(eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and i'd recommend you give it a look. between the heart attack and the dead body you probably have some trauma you need to release. not much talking like talk therapy which i'm sure is part of the reason it's really helping soldiers and the nontalkative types.

now that i'm done w/ that it feels like spam but it's not. just met a few people who it's really helped. again. keep the pics coming and hope for a speedy recovery!

Wow, that is so generous, though pride makes me feel reluctant to take advantage of such a bighearted offer! Pride sometimes keeps us from doing the right thing, doesn't it? I should just be happy, swallow my stupid pride, and give you the chance to do this awesomely cool deed!

Fair question! Answer - poor eating habits for a good portion of my life. You know... the shit that tastes so good, but is also terrible for us. Though I have been eating healthier for the last few years, it caught up to me. Also, I was a bit overweight, though you wouldn't look at me and say "Look at that fat guy". Still it was this combination that did it. Doctor said it was because I was a non smoker, and was as active as I was that helped save me.
Wow Im glad you're OK LBL! It sure does make me think about how what I'm doing now (smoking, drinking, VERY bad eating habits, lack of exercise) could affect me later.... Your photos are the ones that always get me out trying to do something interesting with my camera!!

Yep, sad to say - it will (most likely) catch up with you. Most people don't survive this sort of thing. It happens when you least expect it. I woke that morning without a clue. None. I had no idea that several hours later, that I would come within a hairs breadth of dying.

I know that we can also get run over by a bus at anytime, but if I had my youth to live over again, better diet. More exercise. More checkups. Woulda Shoulda Coulda.

Anyway..back to some photos, shall we?

I'm glad to hear you're doing well and that this scare didn't get you. You share some great photos on here and obviously have a lot of good stuff going for you.

I lost a buddy (and occasional poster here) almost two years ago that way. He wasn't home - he was still on the ski out to the trailhead from a quick BC lap. Other buddy had to decide when to stop CPR and complete the ski out. They were only about 5 miles from the hospital as the crow flies, too. I guess it goes to show that even if you're pretty active, you still have to watch what you eat and count your blessings.

Wow, what a heart-breaker. It happens more often than we care to think about.

Yes, even if one is active, you just never know.... Having said that, I can tell you this. I should have been checking my blood pressure. That would have shown me that there was trouble brewing, then have a heart specialist recommend options on how to fix/control the problem. I bought a home BP unit (a little late for that) and I check mine everyday. My readings are great now, and it is somewhat of a comfort to know that on a daily basis.

    Spring... I hate spring.

It is getting towards the end of a somewhat mediocre winter, at least at the (low elevation) local hill. I can count the good days we've had on one hand. The great days, well, one finger sadly. But boy, was it a doozy. Normally we have pretty good seasons, the last 3 have been exceptionally good. We had day after day of awesome conditions. Not so this year.

But I had my best day ever on the hill (or any hill for that matter) last Thursday night. Seems there were no more than twenty cars in the parking lot. It was snowing. Hard. The kind of snow that I have dreams about. Not a bit of wind. Millions and millions of flakes falling straight down. It was, for lack of a better word, magical. It snowed like that all night. I actually laid down on the slope, face up, and just watched the flakes falling. Awesome.

Now, for whatever reason, I found myself boarding like I have never boarded before. I thought I knew how to board. I was wrong. And it is hard to explain. New board? Sure. Big reason. Rocker. No doubt, but there was more to it. Music? Yes, I was rocking out, perfect time and place to listen to some good tunes. My boots were looser than normal, only tied up half way. I had clear goggles. That helped. Living life like there may be no tomorrow? Yes.

It was one run after another like I have never experienced. I was finding myself in the air, over and over. My skin was tingling, and I could not stop smiling, other than to shout to myself. WOW!!, Shit!!, Holy Shit!!. Things like that.

Usually runs, that have been chopped up, give me a bit of trouble. Not so that night. Tore them bitches up. Found pockets of untouched pow. More Holy Shits. Time seemed to stand still. I had died and gone to heaven. Who would have thought that 6 weeks after a massive (doctor's words) heart attack, that I would be experiencing this? Not me. While in the hospital, I thought my days of sliding down snow covered slopes were over. I was devastated. Heartbroken. How wrong I was. Looks like the best is yet to come......

.....go out and make this season the best season of your life. Ski that line, take that trip, slide that rail, make that leap, live for the moment, and make memories with friends that’ll last a lifetime, because as a great man once said, “If you don’t do it this year, you’ll be one year older when you do.”
