Forget the Mini-14 and get the M1 and an AR-15.

The Mini-14 is reliable, but groups at 6-8" at 100 yards, and that's about as good as it gets. Any off the shelf AR will do much, much, better.

OK, here's another question- I'm considering an AR and the new 6.5 Grendel caliber sounds interesting. Anyone know if this round's got a future? Also, who makes a better complete gun and who makes the better uppers, lowers, etc. if I decide to mix 'n' match?

Other options include the new Mini-14 Ranch NRA edition (thinking 6.8mm) or the Springfield M1.
Have shot AR's much before? If not, you might not like it, not everyone does. I'd get a .223 upper first, since you already have ammo for it, and because that will be easier to resell if you end up not liking it. I have heard that the 6.5 round is pretty good though, almost all the capabilities of a .308.

Do you have a price range? Mini 14 to M1A is a pretty big jump.

Not all minis are inaccurate. I've never taken the time to find a load that works really well with mine, but I've shot one inch groups at 50 yards with mine. The problem with buying a new mini is that there's just so much variation in the accuracy. Some are shooters, and some just flat out suck. I would only buy another one if it was a used one, and I was buying it from a friend of mine, that way I could take it out and see how it shoots. Minis also have a pretty thin barrel, so even the more accurate ones heat up and lose accuracy fairly quickly.

I love my mini, but I suggest getting something else. Minis have always been great cheap, absolutly reliable guns, but recently the prices are soared. At the old prices (I got mine for $300 with scope mounts and a few mags) they were a great deal. For $700+ for a used one, there's better choices.

    Get the Springfield.

My Mini-14 is a stainless version from back in the early 80's. We have messed with it a bunch to improve the accuracy to no help. I never bothered to waste any Gold Medal Match ammo in it, but doubt that it would help. If I was lucky, I could get 5 rounds in a standard sized paper plate at about 75 yards.

I would not spend the money on a Mini not knowing if you're going to get a decent one or not. For a few more bucks, you can do better.

If you are a tinkerer, you can build yourself an AR-15 for under $600. That's a no-frills base A2 model, fixed stock, etc. Double Star receiver and a parts kit from Model 1 sales or J&T Distributing.

Look around on here http://www.sturmgewehr.com/webBBS/semi4sale.cgi and see what you can find. NEVER offer the asking price on any firearm, used or new.

Viva... I would suggest sticking with one of the big 4 names...

    Armalite
    Bushmaster
    Colt
    Rock River

All make excellent AR's. DPMS also makes some decent ones. Check out AR15.com for all you could ever want to know on the suckers... Lemme know if you have any specific ?'s, they really are like legos for adults.

This is (from what I've heard) the big problems with past mini 14's - the barrel. It heats up quick and throws lead wild.

Went to the Bozeman gunshow yesterday; mostly old crap and a bunch of grumpy old kooks, but I did find some stuff I like. Only bought 2 composite AK mags, shouldn't have bought any considering what a GIGANTIC ass-clown the guy selling them was, but hey whatever they're in-hand and I didn't have to have them shipped over the internet. On the flipside though, spoke to a Missoula dealer who is importing a bunch of Tsaiga 12-gauges, and I may be picking one of those up in the next couple weeks...550-ish, he thinks.

    Sounds good to me.

Probably going to buy a non-carrying-handle upper for an AR, turn mine into an M-4, I just have a collapsing stock issue to work out right now.

Here's my mess of AR junk.

Top is a shorty Colt w/ 10.5" upper receiver.
Middle is a SoCom Manufacturing receiver with a 1" stainless bull barrel, match trigger, sub MOA gun we built.
Bottom is a preban A2 Sporter II CMP edition with match trigger.

Top is a Canadian Diamarco LMG upper.
Next is a Vietnam era A1 teardrop upper
Next down is a 9mm subgun upper.
Next down is a heavy barreled shorty we built on a Bushy receiver.
Bottom is a .22lr upper using a Ciener kit with a .223 suppressor

    3 Bushy's ready to build.

    Mags and assorted AR shit.

someone once described a gun show as...
"full of the very people i bought a gun to protect myself from in the first place"
although i've been to some decent gun shows.

Went to one this weekend, first in several years. Same bunch of mouth-breathers as always.

Left without buying a thing. Wish I had my 8 bucks back. And did I mention the stuffed toy animal vendors? No beef jerky this time either.

I've stopped going to the gun shows. Why pay an entry fee to something where people are trying to sell me shit?. They should pay me to attend. The deals really aren’t that good anymore And more and more the vendors are the tin foil hat crowd. I bought a major medical kit from the Montana Militia guys at a Spokane show, and this guy is telling me how NATO troops are training in the woods along the Canadian/Montana border for an occupation of the US. He knows this because he's been finding NATO brass scattered around in the woods. Kook.

Anyway, I can get better deals and selection with the local online classifieds.

Said NATO troops training in the woods are probably Air Force students going through survival school - the field portion is up in the Colville Nat'l Forest, on the WA/ID/Canadah border. The evasion part was fun, complete with helis and tracked vehicles and trucks roaming through trying to capture you.

Still, I don't listen to much of what the folks have to say, for the same reason - some dude was spouting off about the ATF/Clintons busting down doors to take away guns, etc etc. "My buddy knows a guy who got raided" yeah whatever. I was just looking for decent black rifle parts (found some), or maybe a deal I couldn't resist. Did not find that, although I did resist the Dragunov for 800 bucks.

Al Qeda must be planning an invasion of northern WI from the UP! There's a whole bunch of 7.62 brass laying around on the ground behind my place!!

Gun people can be very freaky. The only places that rival the left-wing lunacy here at TGR is the right-wing lunacy at many gun forums.

I bought mine several years ago. Run it in closed bolt configuration. Cool to shoot, but kinda dwarfs the 16. The kits have gone through the roof now. Upper alone is about $1,500 if you can find one. The open bolt fire control kit alone is about $1,200. The magic green spring buffer setup is about $800. Talked to a fellow who worked at Colt. Went into a back part of the warehouse and saw them running over stacks of them with a loader to crush them. Said he almost cried. Tried to explain the value but nobody cared.

Sorry, don't know squat about Hi Powers.

As much as the repetative mention and sight of the pride of the Soviets, the AK-47, in this thread pleases me, I cannot help but wonder how much longer my heavily-armed Comrades will allow the tyranny of capitalism to continue. We must take these communist arms and use them to overthrow the tyranny that is an unequal society. Comrades, the time has come!

Hey, just a heads up I thought I'd pass along, CDNN has barreled FN PBR XP .308 bolt action receivers for $399+shipping, which comes to $20something.

    Thats this rifle:

    http://www.fnhusa.com/le/products/fi...04&mid=FNM0012

Either 20" or 24" with the receiver, barrel, trigger assembly, trigger gaurd, asembly for detachtable mags with one mag, optics rail, 30mm scope rings with 1" inserts, basically everything you need but a stock and scope, for $420. They said they should have stocks in a couple weeks.

Pretty incredible deal, I noticed earlier this year that sportsmen's warehouse was selling the complete rifle for about $1800.

Heres a thread from a random forum with some info. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubb...=664032&page=1

These are the guys with the guns, they're not listed on the site, so you have to give them a call.

    http://www.targetsportsinc.com/error.itml

I still can't believe how good of a deal this is. It appears to be legit though. If anyone is in the market for a high quality 308 bolt gun, fucking JUMP on this.

From the research I've done, it will fit any winchester 70 SHORT ACTION stock, with just a bit of tweaking needed to fit the detachable mag assembly.

Man, if they had those FN's in the .300 WSM model I'd be really tempted. Drop it into a McMillan A-4 and that'd be one hell of a rifle.

Shouldn't Zombie Stalin be talking about AK's instead of Zombie Lenin? I mean, Lenin was in the Snow White Humidore quite awhile before Kalashnikov's deathbaby.

    Dude, read.

The PBR XP is available in both 20”and 24” barrel lengths. All XP models are chambered in .308 Win. / 7.62x51mm NATO caliber, with the new 300 WSM chambering also available in a 24” FLP model.

Yeah - I'm sure it says that on FN's site, however the $399 is for .308's only.
Hence me wishing the $399 deal guys were selling the .300 WSM for the same price.

Nathan - forgot about the Zombie thing. That pretty much changes everything.
