    Doing Oceanside 70.3...

So I finished the CA Oceanside 70.3 half-ironman (triathlon for jongs) on Sunday, and I didn't really train for the thing. I'll file that under un-smart things done. However, I finished it, taking my sweet-ass time doing so, and came in at around 7:18. I treated it like a long workout through the rolling green hills and beachside ocean breeze. I hadn't swam since, oh, November (I'm a fish, tho), and my biking and running were lacking, but I finished it dammit and I'm proud to say I did. The course was beautiful, and if given the chance I'd do it again.

However, I think it's my lung alveoli that are burning very slightly since the finish of the race. I've heard this symptom heals after a few days? When I breath deep, I can feel a very small burning sensation in the upper part of my chest area/lower part of my larynx area. Yes, yes I know - un-smart things done. Otherwise from this, I'm fine. Anyone else ever get this symptom after over-exertion?

Well, you did tell me it was a "stupid race" didn't you?

I've had something similar to what you describe, but more of a congestion and no burning associated. In your case it might be the fresh ocean air that you're not used to exercising in (especially as you haven't really been exercising) or maybe your lungs miss the smog of the glorious Inland Empire.

    Anywho, nice effort.

    Congrats!

Yes, I did tell you that. But truly it wasn't a stupid race, it was a beautiful race! I prepared mentally, does that count? And...I skied, biked, and ran a bunch within the week prior to the race (taper? HA!)...eh, I know, I haven't been exercising on a regular basis. But now that I have this race out of the way, that will change. I have olympic-dist Wildflower (another tri) early next month, the weekend before the mini. So, I'll be on a roll pretty quick here. At least I know I can run 13 miles!! Now my "regular" 6 mile loop will be a no-brainer.

Viva, are you doing any running races this year?
    Cliff - thanks!

Wow, I wish I was that out of shape.

    Congrats.

    Good stuff.
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

Must have been the high altitude training

Glad it went reasonably well. Next time trying training a little, I hear it helps, but I wouldn't know that from personal experience.

BTW- if you are going to Mammoth soon with your BAF card it was fantastic all last week.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

    Well done!

As for your lungs, back in my athlete days (tris and ultras) I would have similar symptoms. It was diagnosed as exercise induced asthma. Get it checked out.
