    The Alta Look!?

Ok, I'm a sucker for guide books, travel books, that sort of thing. , I've got 4 different hiking books that cover Escalante/Glen Canyon region. So imaging my glee when I came across the book:

Utah Underground, Guide to Real Fun by Bill Kerig

The book, intended to give locals, transplants and tourists the inside scoop does a pretty good job. I've used it more like a phone book than a guide book for reservatons and directions.

However, the other day, I came across the part about Alta. Please read on for some tips on the Mecca.

    from page 126:

    The Alta Look
"Equipment is the most important here. Mount some telemark bindings on fat skis (preferably K2's Jerry Launcher, which has Jerry Garcia-inspired graphics). Now get some Scarpa tele boots, a pair of high-cuffed Marmot gloves, and some technical but not flashy Gore-Tex, and your good to go."

This guy is trying to convice people alta has a look? I think I am going to gag.
Wear what you want. Skiing technique is definantly more of an attention getter than your gloves.

Whatever, go ahead and gag. Alta DOES have "a look". Everybody is trying to look all extremo and shit. And it's all about the gloves.

I'd always thought of this as the Alta look.

    Roo's got the right idea.

The Alta "look" is a big shit eatin' grin on a face covered with ice or snow.

The book is a purely superficial skim of shallow dimensia unless it includes the Alta smell .

    Wink

He covers all Utah area ski resorts detailing each places' look...
At the bird... on the tram, you should have long, fat skis, with your helmet placed on top of said skis
I was wondering if Kerig is a maggot/minion...
Met him on the tram and skied a few runs with him in May 2002

Factoring out the "I just rolled in from Texas" look, I'll admit there's an Alta look. To me it's just practical - good (but most likely well-used) gore-tex, helmet, fat skis - WTF else are you going to use? It never occurs to me until I go somewhere else and I notice the majority of the people are wearing trendy stuff that it would never occur to me to ski in.

    Like Deer Valley... oops.

    Or Park City... oops.

Maybe it's not actually like any other resort.

I'm not saying it's the only place where people are more concerned with functional/useful clothing and gear, just that if I go to the Bird/Brighton/Solitude..., I suddenly notice the hordes wearing baggy clothes that are falling off. To me that's being trendy for the sake of being trendy. (I mean does it even matter if your pants are waterproof/breathable if they're falling off your ass??) And you don't see it much at Alta among regulars. Or Silverton, etc...

(i.e. don't spend your hard earned summer $ on clothes; spend it on gear)

Monkey, I'm really glad your getting a lot of miles from that pic. One of my favorites! Still got that one of me skiing/impersonating Bigfoot?

    The Brighton Look
"Go with snowboard wear. Special Blend of Burton gear are both good choices. Buy a cheap beanie at D.I. (Deseret Industries, the best and biggest chain of second hand stores I can think of) and some Spy goggles. If your a skier, go old-school with a Gerry down parka and a pair of retro-styled fatties."
