    Prophet Question

    Hi,

Im going to be going to college in colorado next year and want to change my quiver up a little bit.

I really like what people say on TGR about the line prophet 100. I found a decent deal on a pair of 07-08s (179cm) but im not sure if they'll be too long for me.

I'm 5'7" and weigh around 170lbs. I would consider myself a very good skier here in the east. I can basically ski anything other than cliffs (hopefully that will come soon).

So do you think i can handle the 179 prophet (maybe mount it at +2)
and is the prophet a good 1 ski quiver for colorado since i dont want to be lugging skis back and forth as a student. I want to feel confident on one ski in all different conditions. Also what binding do you reccommend, any comments on the jester?

    Thanks,
    Eric

lucky you, i wish i went to school in colorado. anyway, the prophet 100 is a great 1 ski quiver, one of the best according to many a magazine, and many a maggot. also the volkl gotama should be considered. i like the prophet better though, more durable. im an inch taller and 10 lbs lighter, and i was struggling between the 186 and the 179. you can definitely handle the 179. don't forget, twin tips ski shorter. i wouldn't consider going any smaller than the 179. also, stay away from marker bindings. i'd say 90+% of people on here will tell you that. go high end salomon or rossi/look. 914, 916, sth 16 from salomon, or a p18/px15/px18 from look or a fks155/fks185 from rossi. good luck with both your ski purchase and your first semester.

First, SEARCH (everyone else will say it...)

Second, what school are you going to?

Third, where will you be skiing? What kind of skiing do you want to do? What is your background?

Fourth, the Jester is a fine binding but a bit overpriced.

Fifth, a 179 is NOT too short.

I am 5'11" 160lbs and just picked up a pair of 186cm Prophet 100s to use as an everyday ski. The 179 you are looking at is a steal if you can get it.

I like to make all sorts of turns. I like to play around in bumps and trees but also like to carve down groomers and ski fast lines in open bowls.

As for the school, I'm still decing between University of Colorado at Boulder or University of Denver, but it will be oone of those

do you think the jesters are worth the money or should i go with an aixal 14 or something like that

Track down an ex-racer who is willing to sell you a set of FKS155s for cheap or get some regular axial/axial2 bindings.

You should search, there was a pretty in-depth thread about these skis and where to mount them not too long ago.

I just got a pair of 179s and they're great. I really doubt 179 is too long for you. I'm 6'2" and weigh 160, don't ski especially hard, and I kind of wish I had the 186s. I probably would not mount them in front of the line, mine are on the line and they have a lot of tail as it is.

    But search.
that's all i can think of, but i'm sure there's something else...

also take a look at the PMGear Bro 179 and 183 - they are in the same category as the Gotama's and Prophets. Read the threads about them, they are supposed to be a jam up ski.

Prophets are a great ski... I can't recommend them enough. They will also be a fine one-ski quiver for Colorado. I'm 5'10 155lbs and I have the 179s, and they are definitely not too much ski. As far as bindings, I have Salomon Z12s that work great. But I've also heard good things about the Rossi/Look series as well, and you should be able to find those for a bit better price.

Bottom line - get the skis immediately
...and then good luck studying while they're sitting in your room begging you to take them out and play

Both good schools but for undergrad, go CU. Really, it depends on what you want to major in and if you like Boulder or not.

I'll be getting my MBA at DU once I get over this concussion and do like both schools a lot.

Either way, I think you'll like the ski and would only caution you against rossi in case you end up getting into BC stuff and want to get Alpine Trekkers to first get into BC skiing and whatnot. (like a lot of us did...)

Skied my Prophet 100s for the first time in a year this past week in Utah. Skied 8" at Canyons terrific and another 9" at Brighton phenomenal. Then, they skied the ice at Alta without a problem. Man, I forgot how great those skis are. A 179 is a perfect length for you (I'm 5'7" and 165 lbs, on the 172 and constantly wish for the 179). I mounted them on the line, and couldn't be happier.

If you can get a good deal on them, go for it!

These skis do ski short, so 179 is definitely not too much for you. I'm 5'9, 175lbs, and I LOVE the 186. Again, between the tail and the huge shape, they definitely feel shorter then they are. Its up to you, but I'd go ahead and get the 186: next season, when your ditching class to ski everyday, you'll be glad that you did!!!!

As far as binders, I'm a devoted member of the congragation that says that Salomon bindings are the only way to go on Lines. For one, they are fucking bomber bindings, period. I have the S912 ti and they've never failed me when I didn't want them to. Never once. Secondly, one of the beautiful things about the Prophet is its light weight. Why ruin that with a big-ass Marker or Look binding. Go with some nice, lightweight Solly's and you will fucking love your skis!!!!!!
Skiing, whether you're in Wisconsin or the Alps, is a dumbass hick country sport that takes place in the middle of winter on a mountain at the end of a dirt road.

ski prophet 90 in a 186 and love 'em. titanal makes em snappy and fun, wood keeps 'em solid at speed. even in a 90 they're fun in pow (almost same dimensions as a pocket rocket). Recommend the solly binders, but have heard the jester's are solid for a marker. They have a new toe piece that doesn't pre-release.
BUY 'EM!!! Heads -up, Lines get better after about 15-20 days too = you quitting your day job.

    GO LONGER!

Hey, I'm 5'7" and 145lbs and I just spent a week on the Line Profit 100 at 186cm. It wasn't a problem and although I'm a good skier, I'm 56 years old. So, don't wimp out - if you do the little ones, you'll be wishing you'd gone for the 186s in a week. BTW - this is a great "do everything" ski, except for hard hard ice. Chatters and hard to get it to hold an edge in the ice. But, then again, I only weigh 145 so that's a lot of ski to hook up. At your size, you'll have less trouble.

If you get these, think about mounting a bit behind the line, like -1. I had them with demo bindings and I slid my foot forward and back to try everything from -1 through on the line to +1. If you mount 'em on the line, they feel too center mounted for me - but, I'm mountain skier not a park skier. I'd suggest getting some demo skis, and then using the play in the binding to try out different mount points. What I liked about mounting them -1 was that I could be up on the balls of my feet in waist deep powder that was VERY light, and still have zero tip dive.

I did, however, go over the tips a number of times. Which is why I'm now using a cane for another few days. Heel release didn't release soon enough.

Demo the 186 size, a lot of places have 'em, and you won't bother with the little ones.

    Bindings

I forgot. If you can swing it - put Marker Dukes on these. The Profit 100s are a GREAT back country ski, or at the least side country. If you've got the $$s, that would be a killer combination. The Dukes are solid in-bounds and climb just fine. They're a little heavy - but, you're young. If a 56 year old guy like me can do it - you can. You won't regret it.

RacoonFace and AKBruin ski the 100 and have said very good things about them.

I took a run on the 186 - 100's and they felt really short and the tips were a bit hooky. I'd like to try them again with the binding back a bit, because it just didn't feel like there was much tip out there.

It's definitely a great one-quiver ski. Like all skis, it has its limitations, but those limitations are fewer and less noticable than most any other ski.

I'd go for at least the 179, if not the 186.

I think the Dukes would be a great idea.

BTW, I imagine the Gotamas and Seths in the same class. Probably the Bros, as well, though I've never ridden any of these skis.

Jim S- Interested in some BC this weekend? PM coming.
