You hope you need 4wd. I've had slippage a few times on those roads. I would go for it.

Proper winter tires (with the mountain snow flake) are a must (not legally though) for driving in BC in the winter. I would rather have a 2wd car with proper winter tires, then a 4x4 or AWD with all seasons. I know its hard to rent a vehicle with winter tires, but if you can find one its worth it.
Remember most of your driving will be at highway speeds appropriate for the road and weather conditions. A 4x4 with all seasons will just get you into trouble on the highway IMHO.
BTW, you can check current road and weather conditions at www.drivebc.ca."A lack of planning and preparation on your part does not make it an emergency on my part."

You only need 4wd if you suck at driving in the snow.
You are what you eat.
