Funny that you would say that - it's literally right around the corner from the foundation I work for, so I go there pretty often. I actually don't love their coffee.... I don't know why. I think it's the soy milk in the soy lattes.
When I drop my wife off at work, I go there because of the ease of parking and no line (lately) versus the Starbucks that has a line out the door. Funny thing is that the pastries/etc are soooooooo much better while Starbucks just thaws out the frozen ones they got in the mail.

I did give it a 2nd place, not First...that belongs to Peets.

As for the Santa Monica Peets...the same thing happens in SF. Same people congregate there every morning.....and probably all day

There are a couple of blocks where there are two starbucks less than 100 yards from each other. And what the hell is with the sizing there? Venti? GrandAY? Tall? none of that means anything to me. I want SMALL, MEDIUM and LARGE.

I love Starbucks. I wish all American experiences could be as bland and predictable as Starbucks.
Have you ever added some almond to the WCM mix? My fav.

Now I just drink whatever is around, frequently Starbucks.

Yogachic, didn't that Peets used to be a bakery? I went there for coffee and pastries (yes plural) whenever I was in town visting Mom. I go to that Peets now, however, when I'm in town, so...chances are I've hit on you...

WSD, there's an office building in Seattle with 3 Starbuck's inside- I've seen it.

Tessibel, I know Zanzibar, but I can't friggin remember where it is. Is in on a corner on Garnet close to the beach?

    Fun thread...coffee = stoke...that is all...

Here I like Peaberry's. Try to go there whenever possible, if I'm not making it at home.

I'll agree with Pinner, though, something about gas station swill aka 'Ghetto Espresso' that just satisfies sometimes. Big ol' cup, throw some non-dairy creamer in there, and go. Sometimes my work takes me to locales where good coffee is difficult to come by, so you have to adapt and overcome.

I drink Mountain Dew Code Red.

I hate drinking hot liquids unless I've been out in the cold. ...and coffee breath just dropped off the list of top 10 attractive qualities.

    Jamaican Blue Mt. anyone?

Yup.....great stuff if you can afford it

anyone use the coffee toddy method of brewing, it's supposed to be better than adding hot water onto the grounds and not nearly as bitter. Although I prefer my coffee a little on the bitter side.
considering I'm the only one in my house who drinks coffee I just end up making my own with the cool little MSR brass coffee filter, just add coffee and hot water and you have your coffee as strong or as weak as you want.....

Hi. My name is Buster Highmen and I'm a caffiene addict. I used to wash down moldy bagels with extra dark threepio beansqueeze mixed with drip. But then I had heart palpitations. In the early '80s heyday of expresso nouveau in Seattle, I augmented my dimensia and paltry income with baristaing across the few coffee houses specializing in espresso: The Allegro Cafe (the old egg roll), the Last Exit on Brooklyn (the last egg shit) and Boswells, where I was manager of a store below a ballet studio. I specialized in boners.

So, when designing our dream chaqteau, we added an "Instahot" hot water tap. I shelved the snootily unpronounceable Italianate espresso maker and now rely on coffee that more closely approximates my personality: dark drip.

Reminds me of a bumper sticker I once spotted on a beat-up Subaru BRAT in Vedauwoo:

    COFFEE
    still legal in Utah

Also, as a sidenote to all this, here's a handy list of mountain-town java places, as collected by the crew over at Off Piste magazine:

Very useful when you're on a ski road trip and need a local java stop.

Did anyone see the episode of "Pimp my Ride" on Sunday night? They pimped this girl's 1983 trans am into an incredible custom car with...get this... a built-in expresso maker in the dash!

It also had a makeup station and articulating hanger with professional steamer in the back trunk. Not that I would use those, but I would feel very diva-esque knowing I had them.

I am still working the Internet feverishly to find out where she lives so I can go steal her car.

    Idris,
Right now I am on "truffe" and cruising in fine spirits. It is a french/swiss chocolate cake always identified by a dusting of cocoa powder and the word "truffe" inscribed on top.

    Just PM'd w/ directions and Fri/Sat thoughts.

    Thumbs up

I'm really not a big coffee drinker... but when I was in italy last summer I had it almost every morning, afternoon, evening, and sometimes around 2am as the cafes were closing so I could stay up for a few more hours studying. I don't know what made it different, but getting shots of espresso at starbucks makes me sick (I've tried several times since coming back... it just doesn't work).

And the best coffee I've ever had was at Caffè Pedrocchi, in Padova... their signiture drink is a double espresso with whipped cream and Crème de Menthe. mmmmmm.....

I had an idea... there is an artesian well on US6... the water tastes awesome (second best I've ever had).

I think I'll take a gallon jug up there and get some and see how it makes the coffee taste... gotta be better than the shit that comes from my sink that still tastes like ass even after going through a filter.

You know...I love making coffee with that Fiji water. My husband thinks I'm sick...I mean, he's okay with drinking water from the garden spiggot. But it really tastes smoother and better. My new Krupps coffeemaker has a nice water filter in it but I still use the Fiji when the hubby's not looking.

I have read a lot of scientific studies that show that much of the time bottled water has more toxins and pathogens in it than tap water. Apparently its due to a lot of bottled water actually being nothing more than filtered tap water put through unclean pipes into unclear bottles and left to sit unchlorinated for some amount of time. Be sure you filter that Fuji water.

DO NOT USE DISTILLED WATER TO BREW COFFEE! IT WILL EXTRACT SHITTY TASTING STUFF YOU DON'T WANT.

    I need to hijack temporarily.

Green tea rocks. I'm on my third cup today. This time with a touch of honey. I feel very zen.

Carry on with the coffee talk.

Meanwhile, trouble's brewing in Southeast Portland...

Vandals hit Starbucks in southeast Portland

PORTLAND - Starbucks is offering a $1,000 reward for the arrest of anyone involved in the vandalism of the coffeehouse in southeast Portland.

The opening this week may now be delayed.

Tuesday night, police say a molotov cocktail was thrown at the front of the building and a window valued at $500 was shattered.

Activists say they may return to Starbucks to protest its opening.

The Starbucks has been the target of controversy since its groundbreaking. Some area community members expressed concerns that the coffee chain would bring too much traffic to the area and chase out smaller, privately owned businesses.

Officials said this isn’t the first time vandals have hit the shop.

“They’ve had a couple of other broken windows and signage and protesters walking on the streets, it’s sad,” contractor John Gain said.

Police said they collected evidence at the scene that will help in the investigation. They are calling the attack 'suspicious,' but had not ruled it an arson at last report.

The worst damage was to a window at the Starbucks on SE 21st Avenue and Division Street.
