Real world ski car mpg

I would like to know what sort of economy (or lack threof) people are getting driving to ski.

I will post up other vehicles I drive as I work out their mileage.

Driving style/conditions. I am either fully laden (4-6 people + lots of luggage) and in a big hurry or empty and thrashing the car up and down alpine switchbacks. On freeways the criuse is set to 80mph/135kph

Renult Espace (2006) 2.2litre diesel Automatic minivan - 9.5litres/100km or 10.5km/litre or 25.5 mpg (usa gallons)

(0-100kph/0-60mph about 12sec max speed about 190kph/120mph if you are wondering)

Yes this vehicle will get much better mileage if I drive slower (40% better is easily achivable) but the above is what it gets on a day to day basis.

driving to skiing with average 2 people and 4-8 pairs of skis, in a 1993 audi 100, 4 wheel drive, 2.8L V6, ski box on top, i get around 26 mpg

08 Toyota Highlander Hybrid - 25 mpg

Family of 4, lots of luggage. Thule Spirit 1600 box full of skis.

80+ mph on highway. Fair of amount of 2 lane non-straight road and 8000’ worth of elevation gain/loss in round trip.

It seems that on any kind of rolling terrain the hybrid system really does better. We got 28 mpg from Tahoe City to Kirkwood the other weekend.

2004 VW Golf (not your "true" ski car, but with traction control and chains it's really hard to get it stuck in anything that is not a 4x4 road covered with more than a foot of snow).

2.0L petrol engine + manual transmission, averaging 31 MPG.

Driving up the hill in 4WD to the ski hill 14MPG

Normal flat ground driving on the hwy. @ 75 MPH 19-20 MPG

1996 Saab 900S
All freeway between Lincoln and Denver with 3 pairs of skis and luggage gets about 30-32 MPG with cruise set around 83 mph.

And pretty close to the same in my '02 Grand Cherokee (4.0L 6-cyl, 4-spd automatic, roof rack w/ Packasport box & 2 bike racks). I only see the 19-20mpg if cruising along something flat, like I-5 down through central California. Otherwise it seems to average around 18mpg; 17 if a lot of city driving.

We got 15.5 mpg hauling a giant mound of crap across I-80 to SLC a few weeks ago; 75-80mph, 3 people total, Jeep stuffed to the roof, roof box full of skis, and towing a jetski trailer to Elko (lots of downshifting to 3rd to maintain that speed).

I want a diesel.

I get about the same mileage from my 1996 GMC Jimmy. Eventually I'd like to get a hybrid SUV, but I figure that I'll drive my Jimmy into the ground first.

2006 Subie Forester 2.5L turbo manual trans with studded snows and a "fairly agressive" driving style gets me ~24mpg. I'm usually driving up with one passenger and 4 or 5 pairs of skis on the roof.

2008 Xterra OR 4L manual trans with AT tires and a fairly reserved driving style gets me more like 16mpg on the way to and from the high country with one passenger and 4 or 5 pairs of skis inside.

98 Jeep Cherokee 4WD, 18-20mpg 1-2 persons not much gear usually 2 pairs of skis on roof on highway Van-Whistler.

Toyota Corrola 04', 4 banger w/ blizzaks and 2 people, usaully two pairs of skis on top. We get 34-38 mpg.

Toyota Tundra 00', 8 cyl w/ studs and 2 people, 2 pairs of skis and pulling 2 sleds, I dodn't want to know.

Carrying two people & 3 sets skis/gear, driving 10 over the speed limit - 18-19mpg

'95 Peugeot 106, 1.0 - 150K km, "Seats five, drives clean"

...skis go on top, not much space for anything else...

3 people - 50mpg
driving myself alone - 60mpg

'01 Xterra V6 manual 105k miles - driving 75 - 80 on highways 13 - 15 mpg winter, 16-17 summer. why does this thing suck so much gas and still not be very powerful?

2000 Audi A6 2.7T 6speed with Thule Cascade box/bike racks full load with dry roads and summer tires will do around 24mpg up to the hills and back to denver, on wet/snowy roads with Pilot Alpins about 20mpg.

25 mpg when running normal
7 mpg on the last drive from Canada to Montana as it had a massive gas leak!

(int he shop getting fixed as another Subaru dealer was the cause of the leak)

It is also super affected by by winter blend/ethanol shit, I get 5 more mpg in the summer and better mileage on American vs Canadian gas.

06 Taco w/V6 and open bed. ~22 if under 60mph and light load. ~20 average. ~17-18 workin it hard.

Like El Chup, i'd be psyched for a little diesel for this puppy...

2001 F-150 4x4 with open bed. 80mph to ski hill = 15mpg. Normal mileage is 16mpg. I could get 18mpg if I kept it at 60mph, but I can't bring myself to drive that slow even with cruise control.
