I had a couple buddies from out of town call me all pissed off about Alta. I had told them for sure Alta wouldn't charge full price as they had limited terrain open just like all the other resorts. Guess I was wrong.

I guess when they got to the GMD ticket window and found this out they stormed on over to the Bird. Not because of the price, but because of the nerve of Alta to charge full-on price for early season conditions and terrain.

Fortunately for them Wilbere opened up yesterday and spread the crowds out and they didn't have to wait much in line in exchange for their 42 bird bucks.

In the single line I waited 1-5 mins yesterday and got plenty of face shots on my first 3 runs at the boid. The ten runs I got before work were the best all year, of course.

The thing that was always nice about Alta for years (and the way I would sometimes rationalize going there) is that even though it had a thousand less vertical feet of skiing, was a few hundred acres smaller than the bird, and mostly had slow chairs, at least it cost less.

Now that their day pass price has joined the big boys I can't see how they can continue to wonder why their revenues have lagged the big boys for years.

Sometime this place really sucks big time
Someytimes it's best just to let the snow settle a bit and bond instead of throwing 10,000 hand charges. Then again, I'm sure you know way more about snow science than the Alta patrol does, homo.

Sure Alta gets snow, sure Alta has history, sure Alta has some excellent skiers there and goods to be had, but to pay 59 dollars to snowboard a mountain that is 99% posers, i'd never do it.

AC, you know Alta gets some of my hard-earned cash every season--both for the powder and for the skier's-only vibe. I don't boycott Alta. I'm just saying there's a reason they're sucking a little financially these last few years, that's all.

I kinda of agree with this statement but I will have an Alta pass as long as I can (along w/ everyone else we ski w/ up there). That's just a fact of the matter.

There are days I wish I had one too, like yesterday. But today.......no thanks. I'd rather walk.

But how can you bitch about a day like today. Bluebird, some pretty clouds, nice temps, no wind........perfect. Shouldn't matter where you are, it was good.

Not going to criticize how much they charge. That's their business (and business it is). But I would like to say that in the past two weeks I have had an awful time with Alta Lifts Company. The management in that company and the PEOPLE IN THE SEASON PASS OFFICE treat way too many people like shit for no reason and get away with it. I lost out on a pass last weekend, no fault of my own, but not only did they not offer any help (it was their mistake) on a day pass or anything, they were completely rude in the pass office. And if you're a (first year) employee working for Alta Lifts, watch your ass. For every positive story I've heard about working for Alta Lifts Company, I've heard two of people getting treated like pieces of crap for no reason.

hey, I'm part of the solution.

I'll miss the people. a lot. I always stumbled ass backwards into great ski partners around alta. I won't really miss sidehilling over rocky icebumps to get to the sidestep-over-rocks to get to the bump field that leads to the long flat runout to the rope tow to the long liftline full of attitude...which pretty much seemed like the typical alta lap run last year.

Elin-that's really too bad you've had a bad experience. When I was working for them a couple years ago, I can think of 5 good things to one bad thing that might happen there. They had to tighten things up there, as too many people were skiing for free when all the rest of us had to pay for our passes, that could be one of the reasons you see it that way.

Anyway, I met DTM on the chairlift there and many good things have happend since then because of Alta, so I can't really complain.

    I'm just sayin'

I did the same thing in reverse. I've always had a dual pass, but realized that more often than not when I go to the bird I don't like it and leave thinking I don't want to go back. Just lots of little things that add up, I guess, and I decided it's not worth the extra money. If I want to go I'll just buy an upgrade ticket instead.

I guess it's good that people have different preferences and like different places. There are plenty of crowds.

But we miss skiing with you dammit.

    Some thoughts on Alta

It was Murder for crowds this weekend. But, the sking was the cats ass! There was a lot of ill feeling about the loss of the "morning halfday" pass. Alta could go along way on the huge crowds by offering a week day "bum" pass at a lower rate.....Lord knows a lot of us would tour, take a weekender to a mom and pop ( Beaver et al) or even ski the canyons and leave the goods to weekenders. Any body coming down the high "T" or Ballroom after it opened was not bitchin' about:the $

Amazing how different every market is. Targhee is opening Sacawagea lift tomorrow, a mid-steep shorter lift, and had 49 vs normal 59 rates going with only that chair missing.
$300 for a summit pass. Etc.
I always liked the vibe at alta, the people, and the way they stayed old school at lower rates. Sorry to see higher rates and no am half day, but I'm sure ill be there again.
When you get to my age, you won't recall anything about how much you paid, but the fine powder lines with fun friends will bring a big smile to your face. A lot.

New Here but still want to rant!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm new to the board (even though I have met a bunch of you already).

Not as concerned with the ticket prices. If you are a local, buck up for the silver card at the least and you will not have to pay $59. The thing pays for itself after 4 times and then you are paying like $34 for a lift ticktet! That aint bad!
    .....

I just wanted to see if anyone else hates the new "solitude" turnstyle gates? No matter where I put my pass they have yet to open for me without a struggle.

Last year I would have never let anyone borrow my pass. This year, just for installing those stupid things I plan to let friends use it there when I am working at Brighton.

The funny part to me, is most of the time they have two people working on the things and trying to get people through them. Add the number of "tech" people behind the scenes and I am not sure what kind of efficiency that is replacing the one liftie they used to have checking passes.

The only good thing about the system is adding pass flexibility (ie solitude)but they havent even done that!

Although, the goods were pretty good today!

I hear of the conversations from upper mngmt at Alta trying to keep up with the revenue increases of some of other Utah resorts. They're not gonna do it by continually raising prices w/o greatly improving the product.
I should have used a winky in the Bird comment.

Agree with the rest 100% I'm hoping the added $$ earned will be invested wisely, not just used to line some pockets.

Just for a point of reference, Mammoth's "early season" rate was something like $74 for all of 7 lifts this weekend!?!? Makes me glad I have a pass.

Yesterday I scored a 3 of 7 day pass for the week of December 17th on Travelocity. It cost $106. That's just over $35/day for the mathematically challenged. The pass is good at any of the resorts in BCC and LCC.

Here's a link for the pass that I grabbed. The available dates are running out on this offer, so don't expect this link to work for very much longer, but I'm sure there are others out there. Fuck paying full price. Look around. There are deals out there. Don't pay $59 like a JONG when you can do better.

Bummer. As of right now they only have 2 of 7 day passes left that start on 12-19. Keep checking though.

Yeah I learned my lesson the hard way about them treating first year employees like shit. Sean the head of Alf's constantly dogged on my skiing (even though he never actually skied with me), If I had a dollar for every time he told me I was gonna hurt myself I might have actually made some money there, it almost seemed like he was hoping for me to hurt myself.

Anyway, one day I got ratted out for drinking in the dishpit where I would toil for up to 11 hours during the peak season. Keep in mind I was 19, but most of the assistant managers would bring me back beers. He yelled at me and threatened to fire me but didnt. Then the next day he says he should have fired me and that I better watch my ass. Then a week later I was doing the set-up in the morning right before I was to go on my days off. The mother fucker waited till I was done settin shit up then fired me while I was eating breakfast, I had all my shit out in about 10 minutes. I was late to work maybe 2 times and never more than 5 or 6 minutes, and I did my work well. Im not saying I was the perfect alta employee, but he pretty much had it in for me from the start. Im not all that mad that I got fired, but I think he is a hudge fucking douche for doing it in the manner that he did. He claimed he did it because of the drinking in the dishpit but didnt do it for over a week. FUCK YOU BUDDY! /endrant

That being said it snowed almost 700 inches when I was was livin at alfs and I had a blast skiing there and met lots of cool people to pretty much cancel out the douches. I love it for being the place where I was able to step my game up in a deep pillowy environment but terrain wise I can think of MANY mountains that have better inbounds terrain.
