Fuck yeah, Monarch worst place to ski Colorado. Ranked even lower than Eldora!

Almost 1/2 the I70 traffic I could see took exit 232 to WP this am. I think it’s normally about 10%.

I kept going to Copper and had a blast. Good snow, rope drops. Virtually no lines when using the singles line and would have been 2-3 minutes in the regular line. Main runs now open. No traffic getting back. Wasn’t up for WP today.

Major lift problems at Mary Jane. Super Gauge down, then Ironhorse down.

Skiing. Better than not skiing....until it isn't. It really has been a good few weeks but it does require increasingly surgical navigation.

Poke around off Monarch Pass today. Snowpack is still pretty reactive, but the turns were much softer and less wind affected than expected.

My turns a couple of days ago near Berthoud Pass were mostly wind affected, and the snowpack was very reactive.

In case folks haven't been tuning into the CAIC site, there have been numerous close calls and partial burials in the last week, and most of the state is rated Considerable.

This report from several days ago near Berthoud Pass is notable, because the avalanche went beyond a "normal" runout range:

There have also been close calls near Marble and Vail Pass.

Vail was splendid yesterday, they opened game creek for the first time of the season. Mellow terrain but when it's that fresh, you really can't complain.

If this doesn't scare the shit out of you nothing will. Keep your head up out there, this snowpack is going to give us a hard time for a long time.

Haha no kidding. I am kinda glad I am laid up this season. No reason to go poking around and getting into anymore trouble.

From the description, it sounds like they triggered that one from below? That is, indeed, some spooky shit.

Yes and no. The last 2 seasons in my neck of the woods had a pretty stable snowpack overall and people were stepping out a lot. This season featured a huge storm prior to Halloween followed by multiple prolonged dry spells and the setup couldn't be much worse. Perhaps a return to normal, but it's not a return to the past "2 season normal" that some people might have gotten used to. Hopefully the snowpack fixes itself, or at least people takes it back a couple of notches compared to what they might have gotten used to.

Yeah they triggered it from ~1000ft away in the trees below the bowl. They had zero intention of exposing themselves to danger but usual safe spots could be dangerous right now with things running wide and long.

Last season was remarkably stable in the San Juan's too once we got into January. Lots of snow and prolonged stormy periods help a lot, vs the windy bullshit storms followed by week+ dry spells that we usually see.

I probably should have added a "" to my post.

Last week I was frustrated, never showing up in the right place at the right time for rope drops. Today was good though, lapped Hallelujah and then went over to Sierra, walk uphill a few short steps for excellent snow. Super fun.
