Think I'm going to ski the Basin on Sunday. I'm solo so if anyone's getting out, give a holler.

Snow White past lake chutes opened for the first time in 3 years today. Still the best cornice on the mtn, can see the landing from any angle and has a great pitch to get speed into it.

I'll probably already be up there, will pm you my number, but there can't be too many out there in a brick red/mustard puffy, black helmet, and tele gear.

Close call near the Basin yesterday

    From Summit Rescue FB page

At about noon on Sunday, February 13th, we received a call for an avalanche on the west side of Loveland Pass with a confirmed skier burial. A mother and son on skis intended to retrieve a piece of rappel gear they had left behind the day before when they rappelled to ski a chute locally known as Butt Crack. As the son traversed toward the top of the chute, he cut across a steep slope below the ridge and triggered an avalanche. The mother stayed in a safe zone to the side of the avalanche and was not caught. The son took an estimated 200 to 300-foot ride in the avalanche debris, including an estimated 50-foot drop off a cliff. It took the mother about ten minutes to reach him and she found him buried up to his waist with minor injuries.

SCRG, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, a Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment team, Arapahoe Basin Ski Patrol and Flight For Life Colorado all responded to this incident although our services were not needed in the end. Both skiers were able to ski out on their own.
It is incredible that the skier caught was able to walk away from this accident. Although avalanche danger has been relatively low lately there is still danger and it’s important not to get complacent. Read the CAIC forecast and follow safe practices. Be aware that high winds in the central mountains over the past few days have created slabs and increased the avalanche danger.
It should also be noted that while both skiers were experienced, knowledgeable and well equipped, equipment will not help you if you are in a terrain trap such as this one.

The view of that from the Basin was pretty impressive, the whole face above ripped. Didn't look deep, didn't step down, but covered a large area. Windloading is real folks.

More tracks that I've ever seen midwinter on that ridgeline this season. Dave's, Butt Crack, and all of Black Mtn.

That guy is lucky to be alive. Luckily no rescue needed. I couldn't believe his luck speaking with him... one of the 3 luckiest avalanche survivors I've ever personally responded to.

Danno I saw you from the lift, but I was with visiting friends, always outa synch I think.

Hi, this is a reminder that hackers have been getting into accounts with stsle old passwords and causing mayhem scamming people in gear swap.

Update your passwords, be wary in gear swap, report suspect activity!

Another East of the Divide focused storm. You know it’s a bad season when Eldora is getting the goods in back to back to back storms.

E facing summit county today 9-11k'. BTL had decent snow, though a little variable at times. NTL had stiff and reactive wind slabs below ridgelines.

I'm sure one is the guy who survived the sheep creek avy. Buried for hours and listened to the guy who was tangled up with him die. Lucky is an understatement on that one.
