As there should be. I'm not familiar with the lift in question, but IME at 40mph the lift should run on slow and at 60mph the lift should not run at all. That's gusts, not sustained.

There are design details that can mitigate the effect of high wind.
    Such as?

    Let's put the lifts underground!

    Such as?
    Orientation to prevailing winds
    Tower height
    Cross arm length
    Carrier side profile
    Carrier fore/aft profile
    Density of seat back
    Carrier weight
    Hanger design

Those are just a few that come to mind in a minute.

Yeah, I bet Eldora didn't pony up for the special wind-resistant chairs. Fucking cheap bastards.

Got stuck on a lift at Eldora for 45 minutes in 15deg temps because of high winds. That sucked. Better not to run the lifts

    ^^^ this ^^^
Running any exposed lift with 100mph gusts is asking for some type of trouble, even if you don't take lift safety into account.

Think about the nightmare for the patrol with gapers getting disoriented up top.

Sure, buddy. You go ahead and design the chairlift that does fine in 100 mph winds, you know it all. Of all those things you listed, only 1 would do more than nothing, and that's "orientation to prevailing winds," and is something very difficult to change when you need a lift that goes from point A to point B. And you also forget the part where people with skis are also on the lift. But you have all the answers to highway engineering and chairlift design.

I have a buddy that has worked for Poma for years, and he has said that there is a huge difference between chairs and how they do with wind. So actually, I'd say that list was pretty accurate.

Yeah, I know there is, but at about 50-60mph, all bets are off. I was referring to the 100mph reference made earlier.

The only lifts that I know of that work at crazy high winds are double track cable trams.

Eta: he was also responding to underoos, who I'm pretty sure works on lifts at WP.

I suspect that Eldora used the chairs that do better with the wind, because ffs, it's Eldora, windiest place on the planet. But if they didn't, then they deserve the shit.

Why would anyone want to ski in 100 mph winds?

Can we all agree to stop arguing about a SKI LIFT at ELDORA when it snows again?

Until then, by all means, keep arguing about a SKI LIFT at ELDORA.

In 2018, I resolve to continue to talk about shit that doesn't matter on a weather thread in a ski forum. There will also be posts with no pertinent information and just say that I skied today and it was good.

    Same as it ever was.

So 2019? Winter is fucked for the 17/18 season. Carry on.

Skiing was actually pretty darn good at the Basin yesterday. Definitely dodging rocks and nubbins, but kinda fun.
