NUKING on VP on the way home tonight from Denver. SuCo was mostly dry and in town at Vail was only light snow but the pass was ridiculous.

Crazy, but not that unusual local variation last night, with CB reporting 2" and Irwin looking like this:

Too sketchy for my taste to go out there and shred, but snow is snow, right?

This has been the best week so far this season in SW CO. Per Purgatory:

^^ Monday was epic. One of the best days I've had in a long time.

I'm glad the North is finally getting it.

Telluride reported 9'' today too. Any idea how that happened?

T Ride usually does well in NW flows. Just look at a map, there are fewer terrain obstacles in the way. Storms can blow into the canyon and Mtn Village without getting sucked dry.

The Wilsons can divert sw flows from Telluride. It has been interesting seeing the differences between what happens on the Dolores/San Miguel side versus the Animas side of the San Juans over the years. Red Mountain/Silverton (and possibly Wolf Creek) seems it get it either way while Telluride gets the northern stuff more so than Purgatory and the La Platas which benefits from the southern flows.

Edit: per a Rico resident who works at Telluride, storms often dump more there than on Telluride (and continue 'over the hill' to Purgatory along with San Juan Ski Company terrain and up to Silverton.).

Windy and surprisingly warm here. Sun has come out in town but still lots of clouds and blowing snow up high. We did ok out of this storm considering how windy it was and still is. Not sure what the recorded gusts were but enough to creak the house and keep me up which takes a really big wind event. Usually huge winds mean we can get skunked, IME. Headed up tomorrow for some turns after a miserable week of work and watching everyone else get some. Have fun out there today!

Looking forward to the deep this weekend!

With almost the entire month of January going by with no substantial snow, I spent last weekend hardpack hucking and charging off the T-Bar at Breck. On Sunday night, while watching the numbers stacking up in Wolf Creek, the girlfriend and I decided that it was time to hit the road and do some storm chasing. Seeing all the snow at the Ute Bluff in South Fork on Monday night, we knew it was going to be good the next day.

CAVEAT: Not happy with the footage, especially the angles - still trying to get the cam dialed in on the new helmet - but at least I can shoot footage again! I also need to start remembering to turn on the camera in all the excitement, as a sweet pillow zone was missed, as was another even nastier huck right off the top of the Knife Ridge - ollying over some branches to get into the sweet 20' drop. Soooo much fun!

Also, last week PowTron spotted a photo of me in Colorado Life Magazine from Wolf Creek opening day last year. Funny shit, never even knew this was out there.

B- after talking shit about the Steamboat POV in the main forum, you probably shouldn't post this video over there.

You might be a damn good skier, but your edits and footage leave a lot to be desired. Point the camera up for god's sake, no one wants to watch a video of your ski tips.

Assuming you're talking about this edit, only, did you read the caveat? There's a reason I didn't create a thread for it (well that and I need more good footage). It's a pain in the ass getting a new helmet and trying to get the angles right again. At least AC/DC is better than Katy Perry and the Knife Ridge is better than groomers.

Looks like Eli just updated his RMNP Forecast: CONSIDERABLE DANGER in RMNP w/ 7" of fresh at Bear Lake last night along with 50+ mph winds at 10k and above have created sensitive and energetic slabs. In the Dream Chutes and Terrain Park areas where the best skiing is w/up to 24" of wind load, slabs should be popping on most slopes over 35 degrees. Dragontail would be suicidal in these conditions as would any big slopes above treeline that are holding this lee load..

No surprises there, a buddy that was up there a couple days ago said he was kicking off sluffs in just a couple inches. Our snowpack is going to be touchy for a bit... So much wind loading with this storm for us.

DEEP. Much deeper than 10" everywhere I skied today (Cucumber, Lulus, Humbug, Contest) since I skied areas that were loaded, lap after lap. I'd say the 10" report was very legit for most of the mountain, but in favorable areas it was more like 14"+ of BLOWER. Still somewhat in shock how good it was. With the wind we had yesterday, I was expecting it to be a little worked over, honestly. Boy was I WRONG.

Thinking about headed to the boat tomorrow from Denver. Would it be worth the extra 2 hour drive or a better idea to just ski somewhere closer like breck or vail?
