CB is actually skiing pretty fun right now, at least for the weirdos like me who get a kick out of skiing steeps that are 50% rock/tree and 50% snow. Such a challenge to piece together a flowy run. Patrol is being aggressive with their openings this year it would seem.

Switching subjects, any "wild ice" skaters on here? I hear Twin Lakes is skating well right now, I was thinking of skating there on Friday on my way home to Golden for Christmas. I have a throw rope and picks of life, and I'm pretty conservative and don't ever want to get a duck patch.

It gets sewn to your suit lapel for all to see at your open casket funeral after an accident with thin ice.

I have a pair of Nordic skates -- haven't been out yet this year.

You probably already know this, and maybe it's not an issue at Twin Lakes, but for other wild ice skaters out there: Be wary of skating on any reservoir in the winter, since whoever runs the reservoir may release water after the surface has frozen, thereby leaving an air gap between the ice and the water surface. Hopefully, it's obvious before you commit yourself...

Turquoise has been notorious for this in the past, with big slabs of ice breaking into the reservoir down to the much lower water surface. I recall seeing this several times when I've skied into one of the huts in the area. Turquoise and Twin Lakes are both run by BOR as part of the Fry-Ark project.

If you break through and swim, people say you got your duck patch (though you don't get an actual patch, ha). We could use a similar saying in backcountry skiing, like if you take a ride you get a ____ patch. Saying I don't want a duck patch basically means I'm conservative with wild ice skating.

Edit: It could be much worse (Epic pass days) so all good.
Yeah, they have a 19” base…I’m guessing 50” for the season so far? Just brutal.

according to open snow a basin is at 55" on the season since oct 1 and at 62% of normal snow pack. now this isn't official resort data but should be close enough. some snow would be great

People all around are saying not to panic, that we can get back to an average snowpack. I'm sure it's possible, but I'm certainly not feeling optimistic. Waking up every day and checking the 10 day forecast right away has not been good for my mental wellbeing. Every day we stray further from the light.

I don't ski the average, I ski the powder. Wanker will have +/- 100" before the new year. XC, alpine, backcountry, powsurf and snowmobiling has all been great. Now after the hill gets beat into submission during the holidays, yes, it will need a reset.

But yeah, bitches gonna bitch. Sharpen your edges, avoid the crowds and be grateful.

Been skiing peak 9 a lot so far this season as it's been softer than 8 as far as lower mtn is concerned, but god damn the bumps that were staying soft have just turned into huge trenches. I'm only skiing because it's busy in town and I have to get out of the shop for an hour or so for my sanity.

Quiet, fun day skiing Eldora with my 11 year old daughter today. Conditions are holding up just fine there for some ripping down groomers. Expected bulletproof ice but it was very edgible and no wind. Having her say “I love skiing with you” just made my day….or decade really.

That will make you tear up for a lifetime.

When my son was about that age, while watching a group of groms, I asked if maybe he might like to join the weekend ‘Snow Burners’ and have fun with kids his age.

He said:, “No dad, I want to ski with you.”[emoji24]❤️

    …..then came puberty.

Let’s hope not. Even a little bit to soften things up a touch would be something to help at the moment. Rougher by the day out there.
