well, maybe, but Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery knows what they are doing and has capable rigs and apparently still hasn't extracted it.

I've camped there and it was nice. 261.1 and 261.5 are right outside empire so might be even more convenient but I have no personal experience up there. Try this caltopo link - I think it should show the MVUM overlaid with the base map: https://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=39.7...49E02&n=0,0.72

Roads with dots on the side are where dispersed camping is allowed.
Thanks. Super helpful. Heading up there in a few hours.

San Miguel County STILL hasn't officially opened Black Bear. I'm pretty sure they just don't feel like dealing with the fuckery this year.

Heard they might open it next weekend. Headed down to ride around the loop (dirt bikes) so might hit it if it is open. Not gonna lose sleep over it, but some people have been real fired up about BB this season. Pretty funny. We did it a few years ago on the bikes and it is a pretty cool drive for sure. Nightmare about that vid with the jeep rolling down it might prevent me from ever doing it on 4 wheels.

HMU if you come down. I don't have the bike skillz for Ophir/Imogene/BB but I've been wanting to try a Bolam/Hotel Draw/Roaring Fork loop on my moto. Or, might be able to meet you for a beer at the Enterprise.

Camping in Lake City since it is closer to us. Not sure what the loop will be yet but you are welcome to join. Imogene and Ophir are both pretty easy, you'd be fine. Forgot what you are riding though? We are all on 450 dirt bikes of various colors, mostly blue.

Kawasaki Versys 300. Has some off-roady mods (Kenda Big Blocks, skid plate, etc) but definitely much more of a street bike. I've driven Ophir, I bet I could make it down but I feel like I'd be way slower than a crew on real dirt bikes.

I don’t blame them. I’m honestly surprised more crazy accidents don’t happen there every summer and fall.

    Update on the truck:

On August 27, 2023, Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery received a call to recover the (now infamous) GMC Canyon located on Mt. Lincoln/Decalibron. The Subject was driving up the trail, seemingly not realizing it was not a road, but a hiking trail. The trail continued to narrow and ultimately the passenger rear wheel slid off the trail. The driver hiked down to Alma from the vehicle and CO 4x4 RnR scheduled a team to run this mission. Due to the vehicle's location, we coordinated with the USFS and Park County Sherrif's Office to ensure we had all of the appropriate authorizations to run this mission. The mission was then scheduled for 8/30.

Tuesday morning, a team of 8 volunteers converged on the stuck vehicle. Due to the narrow trail, bringing more than 1-2 vehicles up behind the vehicle was not feasible. The truck was located at high elevation, off-camber, and in a scree field, making anchors a challenge. The team attempted to place a pull pal anchor in different locations several times but were unsuccessful. They were eventually able to maneuver the vehicle onto several traction boards, and then made the decision to attempt to drive one of the recovery rigs around the stuck vehicle to be able to conduct a pendulum recovery (rescue vehicle—SV—rescue vehicle; rescue vehicles using combination of equipment and winches to “swing” the SV via a “pendulum” back onto the trail). The team was unable to successfully fit the recovery rig around the truck. After a long day working at high elevation and running out of daylight, they decided to abandon the recovery for that day and return another day with a different plan.

CO 4x4 RnR continued to work in the background to develop a plan to recover the vehicle that would minimize trail and resource damage. We scheduled a second mission for the following weekend, during which time the subject reported that he had contacted commercial tow company to attempt to recover the vehicle. We were advised that the truck had been recovered on September 1, after spending 6 days on the trail. Overall, our team put in a total of 132-man hours and drove a total of 1,480 miles to assist the owner of this vehicle. We are very happy to hear that he was able to get it off the trail safely.

I saw a photo and it looked like they used a Bobcat. Had to do some damage I would think.

Haha, Yeah true. I'm not too worried about some talus and scree. It does suck that things like this give the whiners who like to close things more ammo to close things.
