Yeah, I'd rather go to Henry and everything else in Fossil Ridge from Ohio City and Pitkin. Taylor Park is cool and all, but it's also the Thunderdome. The trails are largely chewed up and loose. I'd probably hike from the top of Cottonwood or Ptarmigan Lake on the way rather than get into Taylor Park proper...

As I said, I'm willing (expecting) to drive to CB and beyond, just don't want to drive much more than an hour. Since we're 20-25 minutes from CB, let's reframe the question to "hikes within 30 minutes or so from CB".

that Henry Lake looks like a nice hike. Amazing how many trails in CO and how they hook up. I was up on Mt Owen and looked down onto Blue Lake. There was a tent there and thought that would be a great hike. looping O be joyful to daisy pass looks like a great hike but a long day. Not sure how busy that area is. I would recommend a campground. We did one night at dispersed camping near Irwin. It was disgusting with human shit and that was two months ago.

A few dogs ago, one of mine had a knack for finding human feces that wasn't properly buried and always rolled in it. Dumb lab, dumber people. So depressing. Even cat holes are looked down upon these days as most ppl don't bury in right spot or go deep enough, plus just too many damned people. But come on...not burying it at all? Kebler was like that a few years ago, one dude shit on a rock right in the middle of a campsite, left his tp right there and everything. I'm sure it's even worse now. Ugh.

Speaking of camping, looks like a possibly maybe hopefully moist weekend for the labor day crowds. I'm here for it.

I do have a good vehicle so a rough road is fine, but not looking to go 4 wheeling either.

Mags, my wife is running the Devil on the Divide half trail this weekend (start is in Empire) and we’re looking for a good dispersed camp spot on the south side of Berthoud - anyone have ideas? Race start is EARLY so we’re looking for a spot close by.

Thanks. Haven’t camped there for years but just what I was thinking. Just can’t remember how far up the pass we need to go.

The motor vehicle use map shows dispersed camping allowed pretty early on the pass. I think right after the winter parking for skiing JP. You could also try 180.1 which is a little spur on the south side of US 40 maybe a mile or two before Berthoud falls. I've camped there and it was nice. 261.1 and 261.5 are right outside empire so might be even more convenient but I have no personal experience up there. Try this caltopo link - I think it should show the MVUM overlaid with the base map: https://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=39.7...49E02&n=0,0.72

Roads with dots on the side are where dispersed camping is allowed.

On the topic of camping/parking - is there a free parking option in Mt Crested Butte? Staying there on Saturday night and would love to avoid the $30 hotel fee.

Elevation? The signs in the free lot next to the Plaza definitely say no overnight parking- but I'm not sure it's very strict in the summer. You could drive into town for dinner and just leave the car there and take the bus up.

Impressive level of dumbshittery to pull that off. I wonder if it will become a permanent part of the landscape up there?

That would be true justice, but it shouldn’t be hard to recover with a couple of capable rigs and guys that know what they’re doing.

The last sentence sums it up..."But when your confidence is inflated by a new truck, inexperience, and maybe O2 deprivation, you can make a costly mistake."

Might need a helicopter lift out of there.
