    Also, Loveland sucks.
Nutty light show over the La Platas last night. Had to drive up to fort lewis to watch it after dinner.

I'd be all over that Keystone/CB pass if I had a place to stay in Gunni. In this era of the mega pass that is a screaming deal.

A strong El Niño doesn’t favor SW CO, right?

I wonder when Monarch will start allowing skiing off their newly acquired gondola with all those nice (perfect) trees under it. Thats one of our favorite chill weekend getaways in the winter. Stay in Salida and ski monarch while Summit is a shitshow.

I don't think I met Fred. Did meet a group in two OHVs who were pretty drunk. Did not ask for change. Didn't get the camper on so tried the ride from the south side. Drove in 675 starts by Penitente. 35 miles of good gravel road to get to Upper Deep Creek Trailhead. Did not meet another vehicle on the drive in or out. Awesome aspen groves on the way in. Trailhead is a little higher than the aspen. On the north side of Mesa mountain.

675 ends at a gate and there is a logging road that goes to about treeline if you wanted to hike mesa mountain from here.
Dropped in to Upper Deep Creek Trail. Old style trail fall line had some erosion but was rideable.

Came to some deadfall so left the bike thinking the trail was not going to be rideable. Walked down to Bear Creek and found the trail.

actually looked pretty good. however I could not locate the Upper Deep Creek Trail that makes the loop to Deep Creek. So I don't think the loop is doable. Went back up and headed back out to 675 and stopped at road 675.3P. Rode down to check out the other end of Bear Creek trail.

rode in a short ways till it crossed a creek and went over to the bear creek valley. The trail was hard to find by the creek crossing but you could see signs of it. COTREX map worked great for following and finding the trail. So i think the loop of starting Upper Deep Creek to Bear Creek than up 675.3P would go. It is a long ways out there for 4.5 miles of single track. Maybe Fred will give out the goods on Saguache Creek. Cool to check out a new area that connects up to things I have already rode. I thought there would be a lot more motorized users out there. There was not a sign of use at the Bowers Peak trailhead. I think I am going to target the Mesa mountain area trails next week. Full Trucker, Trout Creek in South Fork is similar to Deep Creek by Creede. It is a difficult out and back but a great shuttle run if you have not ridden that.

Durango weather guy posted a early prediction yesterday.
I have noticed a number of "Winter Outlooks" coming out recently. I am also getting anxious for Winter and my thinking on Winter has not changed. It will start late as El Nino transitions into an El Nino modoki. From late December/early January through April we will experience below-average temperatures and above-average snowfall. Lower elevation areas will receive more snow than last year. Mid-elevations and mountain areas will receive slightly less snow than last (still considerably above average). All areas will be colder than last year from January through April. Some of you may remember the winter of 2009-2010, that is what I am expecting.
09-10 was above average for this area, but not like last season. He has said that the transition periods in the ENSO cycle produce the biggest snow years in the SW. I trust him a bit more than the farmers almanac or any of those other "winter predictions"

I'll ruin it for you, anyone interested in where this is should go to 'River North' in Denver and then drive two hours east and you should find it.

You know... I've only had one day at Jackson that was only *slightly* "skunky" and FT was there.

    Coincidence? I'm thinking not.

It's easy to get skunked at Jackson. Shit faces East. If it isn't snowing, it's pretty mediocre. (Of course that's when you go into Granite and change the ballgame entirely)

Heading to the Taylor River next weekend. Anytime have a good hiking recommendation? Would like something that gets to/above tree line. Not looking for a super hard long day but doesn't have to be easy either. And IME I haven't found great hiking near the Taylor (maybe I'm missing something?) so happy to drive toward CB for something good, but don't want an insanely long drive either, so things way on the other side of CB probably aren't great.

I do have a good vehicle so a rough road is fine, but not looking to go 4 wheeling either.

I think there’s good hiking in either direction off Cottonwood Pass, but I haven’t done it myself. Too far away?

Cottonwood Pass isn't too far away, though I was assuming I'd be driving towards/through CB.

Am I missing something? Sounds like 14 miles? That's definitely a super hard long day in my book.

1/2 of it's downhill. Long day, but not super-hard.

    Doctor's park? The other end
Taylor pass is a jeep road, but cool way to get up high.
I've hiked South Lottis a few times when we've stayed there. pretty cool, not really amazing, but a nice hike.
