Best run I've ever done was out of Hessie (with a 5am start in October). We saw no one for 4+ hours. The last 15 minutes we passed 50+ leaf peepers, many of whom were blocking the trail taking selfies. In other words, it's easy to get away from crowds of idiots. But crowds of idiots are always annoying.

the drugs made me realize it's not about the drugs
I never went there and never had any interest, but I'm sorry to see that they're closing.

Sucks to see that. It seemed like they were doing really well with lots of interest. Like they said in the article, maybe an entrepreneur can find a spot closer to the Front Range and give it a go.
Really sad to see Bluebird go, it really did serve a need. There were some growing pains last season that I hadn't really seen before (via the wife who worked there all 4 years), and the location didn't help either. But it wasn't the only thing.
idk how or where you would do this but I kinda felt like having something with human powered access to steeper more challenging terrain would really help with repeat visitors or be more enticing to folks with prior backcountry knowledge. Maybe there was some of that and I just assumed there wasn't really? admittedly I never made it there, thought it would be cool to check out for a day but it just never really lined up for me I guess.
It looked to me, for experienced folks, like a long drive to pay to access subpar terrain/snow.
But I was also told there was some fun to be had.
I had free access and never went. My loss?
Nice concept in a poor location. Colorado is hard for that. Imagine if Berthoud Pass Ski Area was a thing again under this concept. It would be wildly successful but you'd need a lot of bombs and experienced patrollers.

It was interesting to explore that private land for a day a la comp pass, but I couldn't justify going back and paying to ski overall mellow terrain, juice wasn't worth the squeeze when west side of Rabbit Ears offers same thing for free, with much more room to spread out and find solitude with my pup. Not being their core customer, I still respect the educational component they offered in a stress-free environment. At least they tried.
I do wonder what Bluebird's long term plan was/is? They would have needed some multiple of actual revenue to make it work. My guess is it was either a hobby business and they didn't want to play anymore or it was intended to be leveraged into something bigger and better.
I think it is pretty well established that there are plenty of skiers willing to pay a lot of money for the right product. I think something similar to what they offered would do great at a ski area. Well, minus the tutu's, bacon and so on. I think that was a pretty big net negative.
Could this concept work at the old Geneva Basin area? Location would be better but I don’t know what the logistics with the forest service would be.
Hatred and rejection?
DRD & SRD don't even want ski areas to build additional bike trails inside ski areas unless they delete and reclaim an old trail.
Nobody will ever open another ski are again, even one without lifts. Expansions will probably cease to be allowed after current proposals.
Hyper antidevelopment bent by USFS.
You need private land or BLM.

normals for the weekend, then decrease early next week with the
arrival of the increased mid and upper level sub-tropical
moisture. The chances of showers and thunderstorms will also
increase early next week with the better moisture.Sounds like we will have something new to bitch about next weekSaturday will see
an uptick in activity as the moist plume moves into the southern
Mountains over the San Juan Mountains and even pushing north into
the West Elk and Elk Mountains with the high sliding east of the
Divide. As the door opens to the south, the deep moisture will push
north to the I-70 corridor Sunday with widespread thunderstorms over
the central and southern mountains, and scattered thunderstorms in
the lower valleys and over the Flat Tops. As this moisture moves
into the region, the southerly flow will be weak, leading to slow
moving and training storms with increased risks for localized flash
flooding. This will be something to watch for. With the deeper
moisture, showers will continue through the evening and into the
overnight. By Monday, the moist plume will have pushed north into
Wyoming bringing scattered to widespread afternoon and evening
showers and thunderstorms across eastern Utah and Western Colorado.
This activity looks to continue daily through mid next week.
Until the moisture moves in from the southwest, temperatures will
remain five to ten degrees above normal. With the monsoonal swamp
cooler turned on, temperatures will drop to near normal by Monday
and may even fall a few degrees below normal Tuesday and Wednesday.
Changes are on the way. Stay tuned for the latest updates on this
forecast.
I'm good with it. Should be a nice reprieve from the heat.
We had a good set of storms roll through on Monday. Things were starting to get real brown and crisp even at 9k. Fingers crossed this forecast delivers.
No measurable rain in CB since June 18th, when it snowed. I've never seen it so dry and dusty, not to mention hot. People are busting out their covid masks to ride 401 through the moondust.
Comin down flag the other day, I just waited a good minute before going after someone, probably the most dusty I've ever ridden it.
We were lucky to get two great rain days last week in breck but it's back to dry, looks as though the real monsoon is here starting today.
Not a drop here in Dolores since sometime in early June. Bring it on, we need it.
