copper was pretty well wind groomed today. taco and 3 off tucker, union, under sierra, and reso bowl all offering up some velvety smooth high speed turns. wind was very strong so I got out of it for a bit over off alpine which had some sick chalky bump runs, if you're into that sort of thing. sun was shining and vibes were high.
actual groomers were quite firm. the wind buff is sweet but snow would be cool.
It’s definitely Texas spring break. Cowboy hats, jeans and accents on the slopes. Hooo boy!

Edit: from comments ‘It was between Rico and Silverton. If you zoom into maps they give you you can pinpoint one of them’

The map shows Graysill as possible epicenter. Coincidentally, skiing Purg yesterday you could see traditional Purg Snowcat tracks on the south shoulder.

I was making coffee during the first one and thought it was weird that things were shaking a little!
I wonder if anything slid! It will be hard to tell considering this storm is coming in hot and fast. 24"+ in the forecast probably 2" of water by Monday. We need it bad... the alpine is so hammered.
Huh! I wonder if it shook any avalanches loose.
So you like your coffee shaken not stirred? I was wondering if you felt it. You gotta think stuff got ‘reorienteted’.

for any occasional Eldora skiers, we're trying to organize a mini in the clusterfuck thread in the main forum.
"fuck off you asshat gaper shit for brains fucktard wanker." - Jesus Christ
"She was tossing her bean salad with the vigor of a Drunken Pop princess so I walked out of the corner and said.... "need a hand?"" - Odin
"everybody's got their hooks into you, fuck em....forge on motherfuckers, drag all those bitches across the goal line with you." - (not so) ill-advised strategy
Good start already, hopefully this one lives up to the hype and covers all the wind surfaces.
I'm (probably too) optimistic about this storm cycle. Bring it on!
Sounds like the roads are rough. Buddy sad it took >2 hours Montrose to Gunni this afternoon.
Maybe 6-8" since 9 am in downtown Silverton, and like 12"+ at 10k already. Sounds like the roads are rough both north and south. Can't imagine 550 stays open past early tomorrow AM if things keep coming in like this.
Yeah, I decided a few days ago it wasn't gonna be a weekend for skiing the pass. Looks like pavement showing still Dallas Divide all the way to Telluride, that's my backup plan for tomorrow.
I had no idea about earthquakes in CO. Apparently they happen often https://earthquaketrack.com/r/colorado/recent
Probably going to be busy here tomorrow. Maybe they will close the Pagosa side again for a more enjoyable experience.
One of the more interesting earthquake trivia is that when the rocky mountain arsenal pumped toxic water deep underground, it basically greased up the faults and the front range had a lot of small earthquakes until they stopped pumping. https://www.westword.com/news/denver-earthquakes-40-years-ago-were-caused-by-uncle-sam-not-mother-nature-5833488#:~:text=Here's%20the%20history%20of%20the, in%20the%20area%20shortly%20after.
Anyway, 18" and it's still puking here- definitely the biggest storm of what has been a banner year.
San Juan slop & 30" deep roof avalanches.
This is more like the normal March big, wet snows of the past than of recent years.

Hate to say that an 18" day can be kind of shitty, but today was. Thanks Vail.
Edit to add: When "admin" takes over the base cam and points it at the peak, so people can't see the shitshow that occurs when you can't get a single lift open by 9:30, you know it's bad.
Sorry to hear that.

Eldora was surprisingly good.

only had a couple of hours before work so I just stuck with pali, took a little longer than normal for the line there to fizzle out but the skiing was good and I went into the morning expecting lines so whatever. the line of cars going up the pass waiting to park was pretty strong when I left. snowstang with a near 11:00am arrival it was looking like, just to throw that out there.
Spring break!!!!!
Silverton was as deep as I've ever skied it. Passes closed both directions and no opening in sight. What a year this has been!
