damn, tried to snow for about 15 minutes in summit
sounds like copper is looking into the possibility of charging for parking in alpine lot
https://www.summitdaily.com/news/cop...nty-officials/
Copper really wants to charge it seems. They have never said one word about encouraging carpooling or mass transit in any of their media outlets that I’ve seen, but they may have. Will they only charge for weekends and holidays or Tuesday’s when it hasn’t snowed in a week? How much will they charge?
Summit County's commissioners approved this saying that it should encourage people to ride the county bus instead of drive. The "free" bus to which they refer runs once per hour from Frisco and takes 4-6x longer than driving. There is no park and ride lot for the bus.
For me to make the lift opening, I have to ride 3 busses and leave my house at 6:40 despite only a 5 minute walk to the bus stop.
Oh wait. The busses don't run that early. I can't even get to Copper for first chair.
The earliest I can get to Copper by bus is by leaving my house at 7:40 to get dropped off at Copper at 9:00.
80 minutes of transit of which only 5 is walking... just to go 18 miles... for an average speed of 14mph. Or I can pay to park. Yay. Thanks Copper and Summit County Government!

Build a lift up and over Peak 1. Use the avalanche path so no trees are harmed.
Think that is a bad ratio, I live 6 minutes from Abasin, but to get there by county bus is 60 minutes on 2 buses. Breckenridge is slightly less bad: using 2 busses I can get there in 52 minutes (vs a 20 minute drive).
The Summit Stage county bus is for people who place zero value on time or who literally have no other choice, like the car is in the shop. But it is "free!" (Tax supported)

The article I read kept referring to incentivizing carpooling by charging for parking, as if charging for parking will magically make people carpool. There was no mention of something like only charging SOVs or 2 or less occupant vehicles.

Highlands garage is free with 4 as is Two Creeks at Snowmass. Pre-creating an automatic car of 4 (thanks kids), we would regularly text chain the friends and coordinate times to have 4.
Summit, is there a place in dillon or silverthorn you could drive to to shave half that time?

Fukt: a very small amount of snow.
Charging for parking only seems to incentivize carpooling if you give heavy discounts for showing up with full cars, like at Highlands. Otherwise it's just a thinly vailed way of saying, "more money pleeeese"
Not only are there no official park-and-ride lots in the county, areas I might try to sneak in and park under the radar are not on the bus routes (trailheads, grocery stores, etc). The businesses around the Frisco bus depot where the Copper bus picks up are not going to tolerate. People might start trying to park on residential side streets in Frisco and walking 5-6 blocks to a bus stop?
Even if I went and parked at one of my workplaces that has a bus stop, one would still result in 3 busses, the other would be 2 busses but because the busses only run hourly and their schedule alignment is extremely poor, I'd drive, park, ride a bus for 6 minutes and then sit at a bus stop for 36 minutes waiting for the Copper bus to show. Total transit time: still 80 minutes!
There is one free public lot close to the Copper route, but it has only 50 spaces and is already usually full.
Bottom line is the bus system in Summit needs at least 2x-3x the number of busses running on ALL routes with additional busses running on peak routes at peak times in order for the system to be usable by most given the lack of any park-and-ride lots. To accomplish that increase means the county needs money... Copper charging for parking won't provide that money.
If we had a highly functional bus system, and it was easy for the tourists as well, then there would be more people using the airport shuttles instead of renting cars at DIA.
The county should enact a 50% excise tax on paid-parking, whether ski area or in town. This would provide funds for a functional bus system and also discourage paid parking profiteering.

Money grabbing dominoes falling, covered as carpool/environmental justifications Breck charging what used to be free lot started it. Then Boulder/Eldora. Then Abasin. It won't more than 2 years before Keystone, Winter Park, Steamboat free lots disappear. LL might be last hold out.
