It was getting a bit better with some sun and warmth when I left for work at 11am, but it was never all that good. The only thing I skied that skied worth a shit was Gunbarrel, which is the only* northwest facing aspect in the place. So this morning I went and skied some NW facing shit across the street, and it was delightful.

EDIT: I guess there's also the Christmas Tree Trees that's also NW facing, didn't get over there. That might have been nice.
It was some weird ass snow all around, temperature wise and texture. I had a few unpleasant surprises all over the mountain. It kept things entertaining.

Christmas Tree glade is much more susceptible to wind since beetle kill mitigation

Wind and snow came early in the north. 50 and sunny in foco, 10 degrees, dumping, and blowing up on the pass. A couple of inches already down by the time we left. Higher elevations were out, but found some good snow down in the burn scar. Click image for larger version.

Deep thoughts: If you don't ski knee deep at Wolf Creek today you'll be another week older when you do

My folks rented a spot in telluride Wednesday -Saturday. Good timing, but could be a sporty drive from Bayfield Wednesday.

Does telluride ever restrict the number of day passes? Mostly concerned about Thursday, even one full price ticket is generally too rich for my blood, but if my old man may be picking it up...

I don't think they do. And if they do, I'd bet you a sixer or two that they don't ever hit the mark on a weekday. Weds/Thurs should be good!

Thanks. I figured that, but my pa requested I look into it, now I can honestly answer that I've researched the question. And yeah, Thursday is looking like a hell of a first day to ski telluride. Already feeling guilty for how much I'll have to ditch the family...

This. I had to abandon my family once on a 27" Steamboat day. Nobody minded (that I know of).

No. It goes "I'll meet you at the distillery at 4:30."

Thanks for the vote of confidence in family-ditching. I'll try to make y'all proud.

I did the same a few years back. We were there with another family, the other dad and I got first chair, he fell somewhere under Bar-UE lift line and we did not see each other for a few runs

As fellow TGR bro North said last week, I don't miss the rat race nonsense of a powder day at the ski resorts.

Oh the days of following the opening of the lifts and terrain in Vail back bowls.

I do miss some of it but mostly happy to just leave it in the memory bank.

Yeah, I sneak in a handful at my local bump but I keep my expectations low and NFW on the weekends until spring. Ski areas in Colorado are a bit much for me mid winter.

Sounds like you're going the wrong ski areas. I freaking love riding lifts on pow days.

Yeah I'll change my tune when I can walk to the lifts like you can. Someday when I get adopted by some royal family in Austria....

I love riding lifts and skiing pow. I'm just not really stoked on sharing it with 18k people on the weekends. Storm skiing mid week, a few first chairs for a couple hours, April & May, lots of snowmobiling with no one around but my friends, touring, pow surf meadow skiing and so on. I get mine. I haven't lived here for the skiing since Berthoud closed.

And vacation. I know it's weird. Probably a bit of a grass is greener think compared to how good we used to have it. But yeah, the average "charging" front ranger can be a bit of dick and I choose not to be in that environment. Around here the stoked friendly lift line and been replaced by a bunch of Chads with pointy elbow that I just don't vibe with.
