Berthoud slide was visible from 40 I think. Helicopter and 3-4 emergency vehicles at the summit and just over the WP side at around 2:15pm.

Fuck. That sucks. I've got a bad feeling about this upcoming winter. There was a huge increase in BC skiing with covid. Two winters ago it was obvious that trailheads were busier and low hanging fruit was getting hammered more than usual. Last winter I was seeing quite a few people who were clearly new to the sport further off the beaten path. I'm afraid that this winter there will be a large number of people who want to take the next step by "progressing" into steeper terrain, but without the knowledge, mentoring or patience to do it safely. Thanks to all of you that are working to keep these folks safe in a variety of ways.

Did some fun meadow skipping today. Snow depth between 0 and 2 meters. Powder, facets, wind crust, wind board, wind fucked, dirt, sticks, rocks all jumbled up all over the place. Some of the most variable conditions I've ever seen. We scoped out the good pockets on the way up so we could connect them on the way down. The skiing was surprisingly fun, but throw some fresh snow over that and dig a snow pit and you won't know shit about what is going on just a few feet over. From what I've seen snowpack is set up to be a solid shit show when there is some weight on top of it. Take its easy people. You can't outsmart the persistent weak layers.

4 caught, 2 buried. There are always secondary lessons to be learned.

Sounds like at least two slides on Berthoud today including the fatal slide. I read somewhere about boot packers ascending next to one of the slide paths from earlier in the day. Ugh.

Mikey, you didn't offend me nor did you hurt my feelings. It's not about me and it's not about you. Its about the greater audience that probably included friends and family of the victim and you generally working on you positive to shitstain ratio.

So lets move past it, help others stay safe when we can and be stoked about skiing and the next storm.

Couple of slides yesterday on the west side of Loveland Pass, including one with tracks entering and leaving the slide path. Also a group kicked off a small slide at the top of The Professor.

SAR just rescued someone from the top of Nitro on 12/23: https://classic.avalanche.state.co.u...p?obs_id=73072

Doesn’t say if solo or not, but I’d assume so. Curious if the party of four remotely triggered from below.

Eagerly anticipating the snow report from the front rangers. What's the conditions at the Starbucks drive through? Get those kids shoveling!

The struggle was real on the drive to Eldora. I got behind a car going slow and had to be patient for, like, 4 miles!

Solid foot of snow in Lakewood, super wet and heavy. Took an hour to clear the driveway and sidewalk. Kids were enthusiastic though not very effective at snow removal. Went to a locally-owned coffee shop without a drive through, the parking lot was cleared to bare pavement. Lots of cars stuck in snow drifts in the middle of intersections along the way though.

Wet and heavy enough to ruin my CDOT construction site. December has been a beast!
