    Portable DVD LCD Screen Repair

So I was an idiot and dropped my sons portable DVD player. I purchased it off Woot a couple of years ago.

It looks like the screen is broken, well not looks like, it is. If I turn it on there is a star pattern where some idiot dropped it on the corner of a table.

Is this worth getting repaired? A quick search shows this model goes for close to 500 new ( I only paid about $200). Any one have any idea how much these LCD screen replacements cost? If I get the screen can it be a do it myself kind of thing or is the definitely a professional job? I like this model because it is a TV tuner also.

I can't say for sure but I'm under the impression that the LCD screen will make up $495 of that $500 price tag and, again I'm not 100% sure, but I think they can't be fixed.

I hope I'm wrong. Good luck

Everything is repairable. But unless you’re experienced and comfortable with electronic repair, you’ll be glad that you shelled out $200 for a new one.

The odds are that you busted the backlight or screen itself. (Not the inverter.) A backlight is just a miniature, fragile fluorescent tube. A $10 part, but a pain to get to and replace. There’s soldering, clipping leads, conductive tape, flex connectors, etc. The screen might be $100 to $150, but replacing it is more of a screws and connectors type of job.

A couple of dealers of replacement parts, with repair examples on their web sites, are:

We did a bit of shopping for one of these over the weekend. Circuit city had some Nice 10" Sony's for around $180ish. We bought a 9" one for $100. No TV tuner on ours.
