Inquiring minds want to know. Reports show Kmart getting pretty much screwed.

It's still rain down there? Amazing what the difference can be just 30 minutes north of you on the lake. Roads here are slushy, snow started only a few hours ago and before that, it rained like crazy all night. So, yes, roads are rather nasty wherever the changeover happened recently.

When you get to the mountain, stop at the patrol room on your way to the blue chair. I might still be inside. Either way, you know what I look like, I'll be in a yellow Arc'teryx jacket and if I'm on the hill, I'll be with a patroller for safety reasons.

It's been snowing at Jay since yesterday morning, 7 AM. It's been puking ever since. At least 6 inches by yesterday late afternoon, according to someone who hiked up. They haven't updated their totals on the site for today yet, though.

Wraparound is wayyy better than a reacharound.

This is nice, but I hope its not that far north.
Looks like Jay could benefit greatly in this one.

Jay just updated the conditions page:

(8:30am) More snow again this morning (an in ch or so at the base so far) with forecasts calling for 2-4" throughout the day today and 1-3" tonight. That means you'll have 3-7" of new snow tomorrow morning when we open for the season. And that's on top of the 4-6" we got yesterday.

I'm going to work. See y'all next weekend

    Thumbs up

Here is the latest report from Jay Peak. It's on

    HEAVY SNOW...

4th update of the morning here at 11:30am. Heavy snow continues here with 3-4" on the ground since 7:00am. We're into a bonus-snow period as, technically, this isn't part of the bigger storm that's forecasted to whack us later today and tonight.

We'll be opening things up this Saturday with at least the Jet and Haynes trails for upper intermediate and advanced level skiers and riders only. Could be quite a bit more if the white continues to drop as heavy as it is right now (11:30am)

just got back from stowe, it was awesome. Skied the trail that had a good base from snowmaking, only around 2 inches or so at the bottom, but once you got halfway up it got deeper, real awesome hero snow, lots of fun playing around the whalebacks. It was still snowing pretty good when we left, and our skin track had vanished by the time we dropped in. We left burlington at 4, samtheman had 15 minutes of sleep and chugged a pot of coffee on the way, were at the octagon by 6:15 or so, breaking trail killed my legs, but damn it felt good to get some pow skiing in

I suspect this is going to be a last-minute decision, based on how this storm passes through. Based on past experience in cases similar to this, they probably won't open any other chairs, but they might open more trails off the blue chair.

My suggestion to everyone: Bring your rock skis. If they open other trails, it's going to be all-natural and they don't have a base under any of this new snow (maybe a few inches at most, from what we saw last weekend). Also, they might give an official OK to hiking parts of the mountain that aren't being served by a lift, or they might give tacit approval. If they make a big deal about the rest of the mountain being closed, it means there are real nasties lurking to take you down and I hope you'll respect the request to stay off closed trails--mostly, because MisterSheSkisTrees does not want to have to come rescue your ass. Jay is pretty cool about letting people ski just about wherever they want, let's not make them change that policy. This all may be a big "d'oh" to some of you, but if you've never been to Jay opening day (or early-season for that matter), it's something you should know because Jay doesn't tend to operate like other resorts.

All that said, let the fun begin!

Killington is charging $60 for a ticket. Wow. That's not cheap for opening day.
