View Full Version : Paging SA crew: Las Lenas getting Pounded!

Edit: this is the 2004 TR from Las Lenas

We received about 2 feet of snow today and it is still dumping hard, even sideways at times. winds have picked up and the forecast is calling for the snow to continue until Tuesday. It´s a full on Interlodge effect- bombs have been going off all day in the alpine. The stoke level is unbelievably high right now. We´ve got Whistler, Alpental, Jackson, Snowbird, and Silverton representing in the house awaiting to cut loose as soon as the bull wheels start cranking. Sunday could be one more weather day, but we are hoping to at least get Caris open for some afternoon turns. Looking like maybe Monday could be the earliest for Marte- but it´s tough to say at the rate the snow is falling.

WE HAVE SOME SPARE BEDS- PM me if you are interested and want details.

If anyone is nearby, get here now. Monday-Tuesday looks to be like ´the day´ Definitely was a lack of base, but it is being made up for in a hurry. Nobody is in town as many hotels have shut down for the season and gringos have also left which means extremely little competition for the fresh. After receiving a Santa Rosa blessing in Mendoza, Ullr has teamed up to deliver. Searching for a cable to update with pics. Will try an upload tomorrow if on another weather day (otherwise time to git some:D )

SQUIRREL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two feet of pow and more on the way is JUST what I wanted for my b-day. Now if only I was with you in Las Lenas....Next year is taken care of, by the way. I will tell you how the money came about, but the moral of the story is that I will be ripping in South America this time next year. Get some dude!

43cm possible for tonight, what's that, 1.5 feet? Not bad on top of what has already dropped. Sounds like fun :D

FKN´IEVE!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy shit!!!! So much fun today. Was greeted at the top of Cathedral by my long lost friend Knee D. P. Fresh. Spatulas were in effect...so purty. And best of all it´s still snowing. It lightened up for an hour or two and then the storm started to pick up again. Shit´s gonna go off if we get a couple more days of this.

Must find data cable... didn´t take many pics today though... snowing all day... no friends on a powder day... I´m sure you understand... :D

Weather day in Las Lenas. 160cm plus at top of Marte as of 8am, still dumping like crazy. Super cold forecast -25 celsius for wednesday. Snowed so hard yesterday on lower mountain my tracks were covered with each return trip up. nobody is in town, it is absolultely empty.

Artie, sorry we didn´t catch up in LL- hope you are enjoying the huge dumpage in Bariloche. Tell Gunnar we said hello from Lenas. this place is going to swell with people from Mendoza by Saturday. Next couple days will be like Private Lenas. FKNA! :D :p :D

Hey Squirrel: I´m in the bus station right now and will be getting on the 8 PM to Lenas, arriving tomorrow. Guess I´ll miss the AM but there should be plenty of fresh left :) I´ll dump my stuff at su casa and hopefully you´ll see me lapping Marte. I´m easy to spot: tall, orange jacket, helmet with devil horns.

To T & L: it was dumping at the airport when I left Ushuaia; the flight was delayed but I got on it. Tomorrow should be sick at Cerro Castor, go get some! T: I owe you in so many ways, brother. Shoot me a PM or email with your addy. And both of you, finish your breakfast before you leave :D

To splat and TeleRob: hope you both made it back safe.

I´m out. T minus 18 hours to Marte!

Well, not necessarily getting any goods in BA, where TeleRob and I have been hung out to dry by fukking American Airlines until a flight to NYC tonight, SFO manana. WE got sooooooo hosed on our flights, with everyone else getting out ahead of us, and busted our nuts hanging with little denero for hotel and food while getting bent over without the obligatory greasing.

Oh, the lives of a dirtbag travelers................

Funny, though, ducktherope just cruised into our hotel, not knowing we were here, on his way home.

WTF, FKNA, if everything went predictably as planned, it just wouldn't be as interesting.

Didn´t stop to catch many pics. Marte was on hold all day so tommorrow will be bomber, but dammit its snowing again!!!!

Volcano and Caris were open, which meant some decent hikes were available. BC-Girlski, my sealevel ass lungs felt whooped today, even with all the tiger mountain rides! lapped the crap out of an apron today, got some nice steep turns on backside of volcano, even set off a small wet slab late in the day. but mountain is extremly stable so far overall.

basom: we got eduardo's for you, second run. fresh all the way down

then something endless off the sombrero. it was like skiing down all of snowbird except no trees and no other tracks in sight

next: 45-minute bootpack to banana couloir. first tracks down 1600' of 45-50 degree knee deeeeep, racing my sluff. first time I've ever really felt like a rockstar

then some more steep and tight somewere in mercurio, probably couldn't find that same line in a week

tomorrow is entre rios time, most of torrecillas slid huge. maybe a warmup in frankie's, still plenty of fresh on the apron

I lose.

Was kinda hoping this wouldn't happen. My summer has been a debate between going to So. Am. again to Las Lenas/Ushuia or satisfying family obligations and going to Europe to visit friends, family, etc for the month. Now I can't complain. Just spent 3 days in Prague, going to Roma to visit some Italien friends and then up to Scandiland for a chunk of time, but damn, Marte in pow, that would have been amazing!!!

Git sum all! Very jealous right now...

You know, there´s more than one thread on SA going... ;)

http://tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16023

I´ve been typing up copious reports of Spatulation without any response from you. I was beginning to think you were dead. It dumped in Bariloche Saturday thru Monday night. Fucking sickness here. Took a side trip the last two days to secret resort. It snowed there Monday but since nobody ever goes there, I was skiing fresh lines today...Friday!!!

Speaking of Spatulas, I´ve been getting endless attention with those skis. It´s actually kinda annoying at this point. Everyone keeps staring at them in disbelief. I even had one guy ask me if he could take a picture with them. Today I looked down at them and decided to rename them Clown Skis.

yesterday:

for basom, a huge 2000´+ fresh rockstar line down entre rios: the picture earlier is me dropping the cornice. snow was thigh-deep fluff to the bottom. most brutal bootpack i´ve ever done but so worth it.

then we found a curiously neglected snowfield in exocet and lapped it a couple times. anything south facing is still cold smoke.

finally we took down hourglass couloir. 3000´, 40-50 degrees, giant rock walls, runs nearly all the way down to the creek. snow was blower on some aspects, chalk on others, and icy in the second crux - anything with north exposure is getting melt-freezed. an intense ride

today:

sickness down the chutes in the bowl at the far side of cerro martin. top is 55 degrees +. deep blower all the way down. squirrel did a sweet jump entrance to rock ollie. i dropped the cornice and almost washed myself with my own sluff. chuck hit an unexpected icy patch, jumped a rock band, and straightlined the whole thing.

so good we hiked it again. top of banana, around the corner to the chutes on the face. more untouched blower. snow is still perfect.

closed out the day by getting reminded of our own mortality. missed the turnoff to vegas and ended up in a very narrow 1600´ coulour where a snowboarder had scraped the crux down to 30´of icy rockfall. squirrel leads the sketchiest downclimb ever, in view of a steadily accumulating crowd on the piste below. we are both gripped hard but finally make it and get the skis back on. then a little 8-10´drop at the exit into chocolate chips, squirrel ejects and nearly tomahawks a boulder. i acid drop it and we ski out. we are both shaking.

careful of that "last run", friends.

if there were photographers and videographers there we could have made a movie by now. three days of pure bluebird and fluff. but who wants to interrupt their line to set up for action shots?

tonight all the weekend warriors arrive. there will be debauchery at ufo and elsewhere late into the night. saturday we sleep in.

life is good.

Raddam,
Yeah- I met Jim and Cree on the first day lower mountain was open. Saw them again yesterday heading toward Manhattan. Think there´s about 4 people here from Aspen.

Splat, check.

Kellie,
It´s buring up hot now- was 10C at the summit yesterday and today is hotter. Typical Lenas day with lots of wind and hot temps. Snow is now starting to melt fast, but still good pow and corn to be had. Entre Rios had some good wet slides yesterday. Starting to see a bit of action on all aspects late in the day. Manhattan was icy for the most part, and then a slush fest though the apron. Paraisio was a solid corn run to hidden pockets of cold smoke in the shade.

Yesterday we had the absolute Éxperience¨ Run. Went touring way out to Broken Shoulder. Ran into some wild horses on the broken shoulder summit. Took a billy goat mountaineering line through this huge rock wall and we all skied the rest of the 4,000 vertical feet of powder, slush, crud, etc.. to the road. After hiking out to the road, we were able to hitch a ride back to town on a school bus! Damn sweetest ride ever. These 8-10 year old kids were just super stoked. We got on the bus with all our gear and they started screaming and shouting. One of the kids showed us this cut out sheet of plastic with a string attached- said it was his snowboard! We were all so stoked. Gave out some Power Bars. What a great way to end the day. I´ll post a picture of the bus later- need to get a copy as my batteries were out. But here are a few pics from yesterday...

Even if it's melting fast, it looks like you've still got a good base to go from! It looks like you can even ski to the road :-)

Broken shoulder . . . ahh good memories - skied it last year on the first Marte-accessed powder day, for the worst breakable crust of my life - I feel like that run is always an adventure - such a sweet line though! Who were you out there with?

Sunday: a mix of backside and frontside laps with the crew. Buttery windblown pow down the gut of Exocet, tasty corn through some chutes on the Sombrero, and a hidden low-altitude pow stash amongst the leñas at the bottom. In case you´re wondering, a leñas is a scrubby little yellow desert bush which is about the only thing besides moss that grows up here.

Yesterday was looking like a down day with Marte on wind hold. One unsatisfying lap on Cenador and I went back up to wait for the snowbus, when bam! Marte opens. I sneak a lap on Human Error before they can man the BC shack and tell me to stay out: smooooth chalky windbuff that didn´t seem affected by the heat wave. Catch another lap and pick out the windbuff down Marte bowl. They´re only loading every other chair so the line is getting long by this point. Next lap I intend to drop into Vegas but end up way around the corner, and boot over some rocks into Little Vegas. 1300+ feet of untouched boot-top wind deposit that somehow didn´t get sunbaked :D

Marte bowl was unrecognizable today: last night´s windstorm left it looking like either a frozen ocean or the moon, depending on the aspect. I decided slushy north-facing aspects were better than moon rocks, so I skinned up the cat road to Manhattan Couloir. After an hour and some exciting rock scrambles near the top, I end up in the big bowl leading down the gut. 2500+ terrifying feet of 40-45 degree slush punching a narrow, twisty passage through a huge red cliff opposite the Marte, with chokes down to ski width. I am scared shitless for two reasons:
1) I´m soloing
2) I´m never 100% sure I´m in the right couloir, and I imagine getting closed out over a 300´ rockfall every time I turn a corner or crest a rollover
Though the skiing turned out to be reasonably easy, I have never been so glad to see a slushy, rock-scattered apron in my life.

I´ve got a camera full of spectacular pics...they´ll go up when I get back sometime next week.

Additionally, Squirrel is the man, in case any doubt is left.

One more update from Las Lenas. It has been an awesome couple of weeks here. Temps are now soaring to about 15C and corn skiing has arrived. Lots of the last storm has started to melt away, but still decent skiing to be had off the Marte lift and touring higher. Yesterday hiked to top of Cerro Martin and found a difficult bounty of loose granular chop and roller balls, creating a fun, yet dizzying adventure through sluff on the adjacent 50 degree chutes. Edgeable windbuff with an inch or two on top would best describe it. Later headed out toward Sans Noms and carved up some smmoooove corn. Unfortunately, the road had melted out so we had a fun 1 hour walk back to al centro in our ski boots.

A few more pics from the trip here:

You guys slayed it. I knew when we staggered past Cletus and Arty in the BA airport, committed to things requiring our return that couldn't be put off, that they were on their way to The Ball.

I knew Spats had committed to spend that lil bit extra time to ensure the Santa Rosa would get harvested, and he stuck it clean with a warmup sidetrip in Nirvana. ...That SQ99 was just biding his time, and the Rev's prayers had been answered.

It was emotionless. Robotic.

But now I see this thread. Read the whole thing top to bottom. Left to right. Frontside to backside. Flip 'er over again...yeah just like that and I see this pic and then it hits me......

My latest report from down there came from a friend just back from skiing close to a meter of fresh yesterday, which was followed by an email from another friend in Peninsula Valdes saying "come on down!"

I'm finding tix from SEA-BUE in the 1000-1100 range. Anyone beat that? Should I wait, or pull the trigger now?

(it's looking like a 2-monther starting on Sept. 1st :) )

Sure, if you don't mind getting seconds :the_finge

Hop- I bought a ticket from Seattle-Santiago for $699 plus tax ($790).
Go to http://www.aa.com and use the advanced search option for all airlines-with at least 20 options. Try leaving on either a Wed/Thu and returning on either a Mon/Tue. I leave on Thu 9/1 and return on Sun. 9/18 and my ticket was $699. There was a cheaper option at $613.00 if you returned on Mon/Tue.

The connecting flight to Mendoza from Santiago is cheaper if you buy separately- it's $184USD roundtrip last I checked. You could try EZE (ezezia- BA's intl' airport), but it's usually more expensive than flying through Chile. Last year a friend scored a ticket from SF to Mendoza for $600.

We'll be there starting September 3 for at least a week, maybe travel for the 2nd week but all depends on the snow. I'll update new SA thread in the Summit forums in a week or two. Also, search for MeatHelmet's(?) thread on when peeps will be there this summer (in the ski forum)

I wish I could go this summer, but can't afford it. However, I should be able to next summer. I've heard good things about Valle Nevado in Chile, and las lenas is a possibility. What is the most similar ski resort to jacksonhole/snowbird in South America???

I've just got things I have to take off, like paying my debts       .

Any info would be appreciated.

Fucking bar prep is sucking the life out of me, I'm not mountain biking or skiing or doing anything remotely cool right now....but, I am the proud owner of a roundtrip ticket to SA and that alone is keeping me going. I know that the reality of it won't set in until we are sitting at the bottom on Marte (anti jinx anti jinx anti jinx) that I am ACTUALLY SKIING IN SOUTH AMERICA. This is something that, 3 years ago when I started law school, I said that I was going to do after I took the bar. And it is actuall going to fucking happen. Ug...back to statute of frauds, procedural due process and all that other worthless shit that I must memorize so that I can never use them again.
