A Roundup of Everyone Suing Over Bears Ears

It's places like these that we hold dear, and rightfully angered the groups that represent those who live and recreate there. Katie Cooney photo.

This past week has been nothing short of a political clusterfuck for anyone involved in the removal of monument status for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. The move angered many Utahans, Native American tribes and many in the outdoor industry, as it strips protections from land we know and love and sets a dangerous precedent for removing similar protections on public land in the future.

Following Trump’s announcement, a barrage of lawsuits were filed by organizations representing those affected. The following is a full list (to be updated as more are filed) of those filing suit against the federal government.

The list:

Navajo Nation

Native American Rights Fund (Hopi, Pueblo of Zuni, Ute)

Ute Indian Tribe

Friends of Cedar Mesa

Archaeology Southwest

In an attempt to provide an educational opportunity for visitors to the region, Friends of Cedar Mesa is planning to set up a Visit With Respect Education Center. The crowdfunded center is intended to overcome the deficit of government resources to the Bears Ears area, which has seen an insane uptick in visitors in recent years.
