Salomon Quest Tech inserts failure thread

I just had a team of surgeons come in and tell me that they are cancelling the rest of my scheduled surgeries for right now and will now need to replace my entire femur/knee and then follow up with multiple surgeries to repair every ligament and tendon in my knee area, cause they all have been completely torn. They labeled it as one of the worst ski accident they have seen. And despite what they initially thought of being able to reuse my old bone mass, they now have concluded that there was just too much damage and lost bone to make enough of surface to make it worth while. And walking again with out assistance is going to be difficult. My knee may bend again but not without pain and crunching constantly and severe arthritis is imminent. Looks like my outdoor recreational pursuit days may be over. I am devastated to say the least and wish I could post more pics of the product damage. For now I think intelligent discussion regarding what people may have seen or read about these inserts in a consolidated thread with any and all similar experiences with failure of the this product. I know there has been much discussion in this thread(others have some insight as to what happened)

but the issue is not with dynafit and I want the spotlight to be taken off of there and focused on where the real issue is. This event is going to change the course of my life and families, and I need to know what exactly happened here with the history of this product. So any feed back would be much appreciated for a mag in need.

Man, that is horrible. I really hope you're able to find some other people who had that product fail, or suspected it to fail, to help you out. You should save everything you've seen about the product, such as on wildsnow, in case Salomon starts to panic and asks people to take things down.

When Joe Simpson crawled back to life in Peru, doctors told him he'd never climb again, or be able to walk. Some good surgeons + a lot of hard PT work had Simpson climbing again. I sincerely hope you'll be able to beat the odds and do the same.

For starters, download the demo of Adobe Acrobat (the whole deal not the reader). You can use it to capture web pages. There might be a better way but that should be pretty fast for a quick initial run through.

Dude, this is surreal, I can believe it. I don't know what to say. It's amazing what the mind can do, just keep visualizing ripping lines and it'll happen again someday. I was just reading some stuff about how the most invasive surgery isn't always the best option, make sure you get facts and details and weigh all the options. Ask serious questions and weigh all the pros and cons before choosing a path.

Least I can do is tell you how to take a screen shot. There's a "PrtSc/SysRq" button on most keyboards. Get to whatever screen you want, hit that button, and it'll seem like nothing happened. Then go into ms paint, and hit paste, and the screen will show up. You can save it however you want. You could also go to download.com and search for "screenshot" and a bunch of free third party options will show up.

Keep truckin D. It's gotta be depressing right now, but point your head toward hokkaido pow and your body will find a way to make it there.

Like you've said before, the body can do AMAZING things and the way science/medicine is progressing on a daily basis is unbelievable. Continue to keep a positive attitude and you'll get through this. It was great to see you in such good spirits yesterday.

Can they let the bones heal and do the ligaments later? Wouldn't that provide a large enough platform to reattach ligaments to? Obviously this is a much longer recovery process, likely requiring you to keep your leg in that halo device for a few months, if it can be done at all.

TC, good luck. I agree with the guys who suggest planning your comeback and visualing yourself back in the mountains. It doesn't matter that you might not make a full comeback -- you will be able to get back up there in some way, and it will feel just as great as the most rad day you ever did before.

Also, if you ever played a musical instrument now might be a good time to get back into it. Or if you never played one, start now.

Only advice I have is get a 2nd and likely a 3rd medical opinion as there are multiple ways of treating many things. Sometimes wished I had done that.

Holy shit dude, my heart just sank with that news but we ALL have to stay positive- There's hope yet, and those docs don't know who they're dealing with You know they've already been blown away in disbelief on several occasions just how resilient your body has been throughout this and I'm positive they will be rewriting the books after your recovery. Keep your head up man, don't let anyone take away your hope!

On a tech note, I just want to thank Dyna/tech smart people like Johnathan S. for not jonging the shit out of me, as previous to this incident I did not know the difference between Dynafit inserts and Tech inserts. Until now as far as I knew they were all one and the same but there are clearly glaring differences in quality assurance and proper R&D. Just want to apologize for any confusion I may have caused in my haste, as Dynafit makes a fantastic product and it's been an emotional and eye-opening ride to say the least so thanks for bearing with me. FWIW, last night Dalt convinced me that I need a pair of FT12s in my life... I just won't be riding Salomon boots, (or anything for that matter) that much we can be sure of.

My sincerest thanks and undying gratitude in advance to anyone who lends a hand, a kind word or positive vibes in this matter. This unfortunate incident could not have happened to a nicer, more giving or stokeified dude- it's easy to see how infectious his love for all things FKNAGNARSTOKE is when you see how many people he's influenced to do more, reach higher and get the hell out there- myself included. I had my greatest season ever due in large part to D practically living on my couch on the weekends and goading me to huck everything in sight, push myself daily, and always think of the next sick line to build or make happen rather than sit on our asses being content with the current radness level at hand. It causes me physical pain to know there's not too much I can do and whatever task I can perform is done so with pride and gratitude. It's so great to see people coming together when there's a fellow skier and one-in-a-million person in need. Dalt, you know you can call me for anything. Ever. Except to move that HUDGE hutch/desk/armoire thing again, that shit was brutal.

TC this is very upsetting news, but as several have already suggested there is a great deal of difference that can be made through positivity and visualization and alternative/complementary therapies. there is a long road ahead, and it must look more than daunting, but you're one of the strongest, most resilient and stoked people i've ever known. we hiked castlerock in late november (5 months after your previous injury) and you still left me in the dust of your dust on the climb up. and in spite of not feeling 100% a couple of weeks later at MRG, you shredded the bumps on chute like you had never gotten hurt.

i hope that for every time you experience a feeling of hopelessness you can close your eyes and imagine where you want to be...and nurture that seed of good thoughts every day and let that reality grow in you and with as you work your way back in small steps.

you have a lot of friends around here who will help remind you that things will get better, and will help you along that path...and you have the goodwill of many, many more around here that you have yet to meet on the slopes.

Take a screen shot and/or save a PDF of every relevant report you can find--especially the ones that (1) existed before your injury where people foresaw this type of failure, or (2) where other people discuss similar equipment failures.

Feel terrible reading this, D. Haven't been following the board much over the past two days, so I just responded to another thread where it sounded more like things were going to be a little better/easier. I know you'll do everything you can to get back...just listen to what the docs tell you, and follow their instructions exactly.


Is it time for a thread (stickyed, maybe) warning people not to use these inserts? I'd hate to hear of more people getting injured because of these things.

Don't know you, feel diminished that someone with your obvious love of the sport should have to go through this. I do know something about knees, though:

1) Realize that its normal for someone with your level of trauma to be profoundly depressed at this point, don't make quick decisions about your future that buy into the worst case scenario. Fight being passive, which is not easy with all the stuff you've got in your veins for the pain. Get a second opinion, from a surgeon who specializes in athletes, not just civilians. Seriously, been there. Even if your guys are skiing specialists, take a deep breath, and if you're in NH, find someone in Boston to look at you. Mass General, of course, but New England Baptist is especially known for its knee/leg ortho.

2) Can't tell from your account if your guys are talking about replacement or just a lot of metal. Either way, severe osteoarthritis is not immanent. Trust me on this one. Takes years. If you end up with most of your own knee, yep, you'll have some crunching as it remodels. No, it won't mean progressive damage, since as my ortho says, it's already about as damaged as it can get. You learn not to pay too much attention. Down the line, yes, you'll get some osteo. Again, you can deal with that too. You will become real good friends with serious leg machines, and do lots of fish oil. Osteo's not crippling. I ski my ass off with most of one knee looking like it's from an Alien propset. Sooner or later, it all ends up as a new knee. And again (refrain), it's doable. Know some guys with metal knees, hips etc. who still ski at an expert level, hike, the whole nine yards. Maybe no moguls or jumps. Who the shit likes moguls, anyway? And jumps look better done by guys who only started shaving recently...

2) The real issue here, no matter how much gets replaced, or what you're targeting right now, is REHAB. Understand your anger at Salomon, maybe channel some of that energy to research facilities near where you'll be that specialize in athletes, not just desk jockeys. Ideally, they'll have a connection to a local college or pro team. Have a hunch you can deal with a couple of years of hell if it means decent function later. It's hard right now, but try to see this at this as another mountain to navigate, not the end of being "normal."

3) And with any justice, Salomon will end up paying for all of this and a lot more. But lawsuits can wait longer than these other issues, and will take forever to resolve anyway.

^^^^ i certainly appreciate your insight as I do everyones. However, I think you may be assuming some things, which is fine seriously no worries. I have done tons of research( going on 6th day bed ridden) and spoken to several other experts. Fortunately we have family friends and friends of friend who are ortho surgeons. Not to mention I had been through a leg break last year and have already accustomed to the emotions and what positive perserverance needs to prevail in order to make a successful recovery, which I did last year and skied bell to bell this season as a result. Additionally, I have torn both knees in college football and made full recoverys.

I also apologize if it seems that my primary concern to you was to channel negative energy towards Salomon. I am actually just trying to save another's leg, or worse, life. I purchased a new product in good faith from a manufacturer, of which many here enjoy their products. Tech talk is aimed at educating the unknown. Any compensation achieved is tertiary and would only serve to allow me a comfortable recovery. Since our insurance will not cover a lot of what is needed for time periods we need (ie an in home visiting nurse). Naturally, financial stability when you have a family and facing tremendous adversity like this, is of paramount concern.

I will certainly make it through this this time, but the break is not something that is often treated and usually results in the worst case scenario. This is coming from the best of the best. Its important to temper expectations when rehabbing, but to also shoot for the stars. Its a fine balance to master.

Again thanks for you concern and I do hope that things turn out for the better as I always do. Skiing as we all know can be the best medicine there is. Sorry if this is not as lucid as I would like, on some killer killers and about to pass out
