Born and raised to an American dad and Mexican mother in Pasquales, Mexico, 17-year-old Al Cleland did not experience the typical surfer upbringing. While his peers might be honing in on the perfect Huntington Hop, that infamous surfing maneuver, Cleland is paddling alongside legends like John John Florence and Nathan Fletcher into the 10-foot grabbers that regularly drift through his hood.

With his front yard counted as one of the heaviest beach breaks in the world, Cleland is rapidly earning an unparalleled reputation in the competitive surf scene. It’s hard to imagine how the charging teenager feels, but to us, we see all that joy, fear, and accomplishment rolling into one incredible experience.
