This Monday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), voted in four sports to be held at the 2024 Paris Olympic games. Three of the sports: sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing will also be held at the 2020 Toyko Games. The fourth, breakdancing, would make its debut at the 2024 games. IOC President Thomas Bach explained that the new sports are an effort to make “the program more gender balanced and more urban, and offer the opportunity to connect with the younger generation.”
While the 2020 games will combine the disciplines of bouldering, lead, and speed climbing into one event, the 2024 games will have two separate events, one for bouldering and lead climbing, and the other a standalone speed climbing event. The format for the 2020 climbing competition has been compared to the climbing equivalent of a triathlon, with different means to realize the same end goal. Though it has had its criticism, the conglomerate format has preliminarily performed well with audiences, with different types of climbers competing against each other in and outside their respective comfort zones.
