The International Olympic Committee decided on Monday that the 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in Northern Italy. I.O.C. delegates voted 47-34 in favor of Italy, ending Sweden's bid for the honor, and financial burden, of hosting the Games. The events will be held between the city of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, the ski resort which hosted the 1956 Winter Games.

The Italian region was chosen based on I.O.C. polling which indicated greater public support, as well as greater willingness from public officials to offer financial guarantees, according to the New York Times. Hosting the Games is a multi-billion dollar logistical nightmare, but the I.O.C. has pledged to contribute $925 million. Northern Italy and Stockholm were the only potential hosts considered in Monday's vote, as five other candidates withdrew or were deemed inviable by the Commission.
