Video: Man Survives 23 Days in AK Wilderness After Cabin Fire

On Thursday, January 9th, Alaska State Troopers conducted a welfare check on Tyson Steele, a 30-year-old residing in a cabin about 20 miles outside of Skwentna, AK, a small town with a population of 35. However, instead of a cabin, the troopers found a burned-out husk with "SOS" carved into the snow outside. The above video shows the scene as troopers descended towards Steele, who had been surviving off canned beans and peanut butter.

It turns out that Steele's cabin had burned down in mid-December, and he had been surviving off the remains of his supplies for weeks. With no way to communicate with the outside world, and nearly 20 miles from his nearest neighbor, Steele had been planning to wait for another few weeks and then start the long trek back towards town. Luckily, he didn't have to do so. For more information, see the Alaska Dept. of Public Safety's press release.
