Venice Skatepark Buried in Sand To Enforce Social Distance Rules

The Los Angeles Department of Parks and Rec has covered the famous Venice Beach skatepark in sand in an effort to deter social distance violators during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the state of California has been under strict stay-at-home orders and all LA parks closed since the middle of March, repeated violations prompted more drastic responses like filling skateparks with sand to make them unrideable. This video above shows the beginning of the efforts to bury it. Since then, more sand has been reportedly added.

Meanwhile, the city of Santa Cruz has reopened public beaches and parks and lifted a surfing ban to give local residents some much needed recreation space while still practicing responsible social distancing. It remains to be seen how permanent these measures are.
