In an unprecedented move, both Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Grand Targhee Resort closed their backcountry gates for several days due to high avalanche risk and extremely dangerous backcountry conditions. On Thursday, two skiers decided to ignore the restriction and exit the JHMR boundary into Granite Canyon – extreme terrain to the north of the resort that lies inside Grand Teton National Park.
According to the JH News and Guide, their partners reported them missing to ski patrol on Thursday afternoon, who called park rangers and Teton County SAR to assist in the search. A helicopter was dispatched just before sundown but was unable to find the missing skiers.
