Vail Mountain’s Expansion Approved By Forest Service

The US Forest service has reached a favorable draft decision regarding a proposed terrain expansion at Vail Mountain, authorizing the construction of one new surface lift and 42 acres of new ski trails on Golden Peak, expected to be implemented during summer 2019.

Ski and Snowboard Club Vail athletes are expected to be the primary users of the new area, but everyday Vail skiers and riders may get opportunities to check it out when it is not being used for training. Forest Supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams wrote that he is approving the plan “because it best meets the project purpose and need to meet the growing demand at Vail Mountain Resort's Golden Peak for developed competition terrain and to improve the guest experience and training venue across the ski area by providing separation between user groups.”

Public comments on the draft decision may be submitted for 45 days after the publication of a legal notice. Objections, including attachments, must be filed via mail, fax, email, hand-delivery, express delivery or messenger service (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays) to: Reviewing Officer, Brian Ferebee, Regional Forester, USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Region, 1617 Cole Blvd, Building 17, Lakewood, CO 80401; FAX: (303) 275-5134.
