There are more electric vehicles on America's roads than ever, with EV sales increasing by 81% in 2018. This is great news for those concerned about carbon emissions, but the range of EVs still lags behind conventional vehicles, presenting difficulties for those looking to drive long distances to visit far-flung public lands.

The National Park Service has partnered with BMW North America and the National Park Foundation to install 100 EV charging ports in and around national parks. In a press release, the NPS explained the need for more EV-friendly infrastructure:

"The automobile has long been central to the great American vacation in national parks. While our treasured landscapes offer familiar vistas time after time, the automobile has changed greatly, and parks want to meet the needs of visitors who use electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Through this joint effort, electric vehicle drivers will have more places to charge the car while recharging themselves with nature and parks."
